Patient sitters provide key assistance with patients who require special precautions, protect patients from self-injury, and provide an appropriate level of supervision of a patient whose behavior is suicidal, unpredictable, and/or may act out in a way that may harm or injure themselves. Shall demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care to adult and geriatric frail/elderly patients. Sitters are responsible for remaining with the assigned patient at all times during their assigned shift except when relieved by staff for a break and meal times; and are expected to remain awake, alert, and observant to prevent injury or escape. The Patient Sitter is a caregiver who assists patients with activities of daily living.
Sitters are also expected to comply with hospital policies on confidentiality, infection control, and compassionate care. Adherence to patient restrictions and the ability to appropriately manage aggressive, violent, and confused behavior is required. While sitters provide a key assist to the nursing staff, they are not to perform any form of direct patient care. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e., damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas), medical errors, etc.
