PRODUCT CATEGORY MERCHANT
OVERVIEW
The Product Category Merchant is responsible for managing a team to deliver differentiated products to market that address market needs and represent viable business opportunities. Product Category Merchants ensure that products support the company’s overall strategy and goals. While the Product Manager is ultimately responsible for managing the product throughout its lifecycle, they work with a team throughout the process, including designers, supply chain and operations experts, manufacturing experts, marketing managers, sales professionals, and more.
DUTIES
Manages a team of merchants and associate merchants for the assigned category of products
Work with external third parties to assess vendor partnerships and opportunities
Define product specifications based on customer, sales, and market feedback
Create product strategy documents that describe business cases, technical requirements, launch, and kill plans
Create product budget proposal including projected revenue, ROI, and use of cash
Collaborate with Marketing and Sales to define product branding, positioning, and distribution channel
Develop sales and marketing tools appropriate for the distribution channel
Establish product pricing with sales team by utilizing market research data, reviewing production and sales costs, anticipating volume, and required company ROI.
Purchase product from preferred vendors
Manage vendor relationships to maximize company favorability and profitability
Inventory Management. Facilitate inventory turnover and product availability by reviewing and adjusting inventory levels and production schedules, including working with sales to liquidate dead stock
Obtain product market share by working with sales and marketing directors to develop product sales strategies
Be an expert with respect to the competition, product and companies
Drive the execution of all product lifecycle processes for products, including product research, market research, competitive analysis, planning, price and specification positioning, requirements development, product launch, post-launch changes, and product end-of-life processes.
Lead cross-functional teams of sales, marketing, product information, and production to accomplish the goals and metrics for the product
