Job Description
As the Deep Engagement Canvass Program Manager, you will lead a team of 4-6 deep engagement canvassers in Mundy and Dundee townships talking to local residents from all walks of life on the clean energy transition on their doorsteps. The position is ideally based in either Mundy or Dundee townships or centrally located between them.. At a minimum, travel will be required to work with deep canvassing sta in the field several days each week. Evening and weekend work is required on a regular basis as this is a community-organizing-based position.

The Manager will oversee a deep canvassing program that furthers strategic policy implementation. The Manager will supervise a minimum of four sta from diverse backgrounds and lead an ongoing deep canvassing program that includes: having deep canvass conversations; collecting and tracking data; regularly evaluating and tracking learnings; developing sta capacity and leadership; developing and running training programs; communicating learnings to partner organizations to use in adjacent campaign tactics; and organizing escalating action-taking by residents.

You will develop skills in storytelling, compassionate curiosity, listening, communication, conflict management, and others, to shift attitudes around clean energy manufacturing sites. You will get to know the deep engagement canvass program, work closely with team members and local residents, and have the opportunity to become a leader in this groundbreaking work.

Key Responsibilities

● Supervise staff , and ensure staff and program are meeting the program work plan and goals

● Support workplan and budget development

● Manage the program within budget and resource constraints

● Lead and develop deep engagement canvassing program with sta on the phones and at doors, including:

○ Participate in script iteration to finalize a successful script

○ Recruit, organize, coordinate, and train staff to engage members of the public on the clean energy transition using deep canvassing best practices.

○ Create culture to support canvassers to continue deep canvassing even when it’s hard

○ Deliver public narrative communications in various formats

● Tell the story of our progress by tracking the metrics of the program within the organization’s database and regularly updating the organization and partners about the lessons, successes and challenges of the program

● Document learnings and share with identified partner organizations

● Participate in leadership development and anti-oppression trainings

● Meet regularly with the supervisor and supporting sta

● Process payroll for employees

● Other relevant duties, as assigned by the Chair of the Rural Michigan Action Alliance.

Desired Skills and Experience:

● At least two years experience with managing teams of a minimum four sta is required

● Experience developing and implementing program and personal work plans

● At least two years experience in the engagement organizing model, community organizing, relational organizing, campaigning, canvassing, and/or leading trainings and developing training content required

● A basic understanding of deep canvassing and its e cacy

● A commitment to the mission and core values of the RMAA

● Experience with Slack, VAN, CallHub, Microsoft O ce (Excel), Google Workspace, and other data analyzing and mapping software preferred

● Experience working in successful remote teams

● Fluent in English, and fluency in an additional language preferred

● Demonstrated commitment and passion for environmental justice and its intersections

● Ability to work with diverse people, including Indigenous, Black, and People of Color and organizations

● Proven strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills

● Able to accurately record results of conversations in a data tracking database and contribute to debriefs that support the team in learning from canvass interactions

● Comfortable talking with people with diverse viewpoints and actively listening without judgment to what they have to say

● Enthusiastic about learning, risk-taking, and willing to make mistakes in the process

● Ability to be emotionally resilient during work hours for this position

● Able to work evenings and weekends – this is a key requirement of successful community organizing and will be required in this program regularly

● Access to reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance is required
