Job Summary and Qualifications

The SPD tech is an entry level position in which not all aspects of the SPD job description have been completed. This position must learn to clean, decontaminate, assemble, dispense, sterilize, Inventory supplies, order supplies and transport these items to the pt care areas, hospital depts. and the operating room. The technician performs delegated duties consistent with his/her scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery at RMC

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate the washer decontaminator, Ultrasonic washer, heat sealer, nitrogen tank and air hose.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to accurately follow surgery and hospital instrument check sheets and order requests
  • Ability to promptly and correctly respond to Hospital departments and the operating room requests for instrumentation and supplies
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment and ability to assess working order
  • Knowledge of the principles of sterilization
  • Ability to collaborate with CS and the operating room to ensure instruments and supplies are sterilized, in proper working order and appropriately stored
  • Ability to stand or walk constantly and lift heavy instrument trays
  • Good manual dexterity
  • The SPD tech I must be able to be a resource person to the nursing staff regarding the availability of instruments and supplies related to age specific needs of the patient
What qualifications you will need:

Six months of previous SPD experience is preferred
