Rodan and Fields, LLC is Hiring a Manager, R&D Formulation Near Berkeley, CA
The Opportunity
The Manager, R&D Formulation is a key member of the R&D team and is responsible for managing all internal formulation activities, including new formula development, re-formulations, and troubleshooting for both OTC drug and cosmetic Skin and Hair Care products. The role includes line management of a team of formulation chemists as well as the day-to-day management of the R F formulation labs. In addition, the role includes acting as the technical interface between R F and Contract Manufacturers on any formulation issues.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Acts as R F’s primary subject area expert on OTC drug and cosmetic formulation.
- Responsible for the development and execution of technical formulation strategies based on formulation briefs provided by the Product Development Team.
- Manage a portfolio of formulation projects, including both new formulations and re-formulations and provide regular updates to upper management.
- Maintain a strong in-lab presence. This role will require bench formulation as needed.
- Responsible for directing and managing the activities of a small team of formulation chemists and maintain a safe, productive, and orderly formulation lab.
- Advise Product Development team on any ongoing technical formulation issues with Contract Manufacturers (CMs) and, whenever necessary, act as technical interface between R F and CMs on formulation matters.
- Ensure effective technology transfer of R F internally developed formulations to Contract Manufacturers for scale-up and commercialization.
- Stay abreast of technical and ingredient trends in cosmetic formulation to ensure R F formulations remain at the cutting edge of efficacy, performance, and aesthetics.
- Work directly with Regulatory, ESH, and Procurement Teams to ensure R F formulations meet regulatory requirements and reasonable standards for ingredient sustainability and environmental & social impact.
Reports to: Sr. Director, Innovation and Formulation
Candidate qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in cosmetic and OTC drug formulation in Beauty and Personal Care. Experience in Skin and Hair Care is required, while experience in Color Cosmetics is desired.
- Experience in formulating OTC drug products, specifically SPF formulas, is a must.
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field such as Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biology is required.
- Minimum 3-4 years management experience.
- Experience in taking projects from concept through formulation to launch.
- A proven track record of working collaboratively and being accountable.
- A demonstrated passion for the industry, business, company, and/or brand.
- The ability to effectively partner and motivate across functions and with outside vendors.
- The ability to think strategically, creatively, and analytically.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills and a great attention to detail.

Salary Range: $112,000-140,000
The pay range represents the low and high end of the salary range we reasonably expect to pay for this position at the time of posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future.An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, to geographic location, experience, education, skills, qualifications, performance, and business or organizational needs.
