Rockland County Department of Planning is Hiring a Wastewater Operator Near Orangeburg, NY

WASTEWATER OPERATOR I

ROCKLAND COUNTY SEWER DISTRICT NO. 1

The Sewer District is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Operator I. The job duties of Wastewater Operator I are: Operates equipment through instrumentation panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units following process control procedures; Monitors, observes and reports operating conditions and data; Reports any operational problems with machines or equipment to supervisor; Diagnoses basic operational problems and takes corrective action per procedure; Performs routine instrument calibration for portable meters; Performs routine cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, inspection and minor repairs to machines and related equipment; Reports and documents results of work performed and enters into the appropriate database; Collects wastewater, sludge, residuals and/or gas samples according to schedule; Performs field tests in order to pace chemical dosages for process and control units; Prepares chemical solutions, monitors supplies and recommends reorder; Performs routine lab testing and prepares reports per procedure; Performs manual labor including cleaning equipment, facilities and grounds as required, and properly disposes of waste according to safety and environmental policies; Operates vehicles, mobile equipment and material handling equipment for operational and maintenance purposes; Performs other general facility maintenance tasks and repairs.

Candidate must have working knowledge of the materials, practices, tools and terminology required in the operation and maintenance of an advanced wastewater treatment plant and associated buildings; working knowledge of the operation and maintenance and simple repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical equipment; ability to accurately read, interpret and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, etc.; ability to prepare records and reports; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and a minimum of six months experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant or related environment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must meet standards of OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection, and will be required

to meet Federal, State and local standards with respect to health and safety.

2. Possession of a valid driver’s license appropriate for the kind and size of vehicles to be operated.

3. Pre-employment medical examination and medical clearance for the use of respiratory equipment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS AND CIVIL SERVICE INFORMATION:Candidate must be a legal resident of Rockland County. This is a competitive position in Civil Service and candidate will be required to take the Wastewater Operator I Civil Service examination and be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: are competitive with the public sector market including but not limited to the following:

· $24.463 Hourly Salary

· 40 Hour work week

· Medical, Dental and Vision

· Time off including vacation, personal, and holiday time

· New York State Pension eligibility
