Job Summary Using independent judgment with minimal supervision, the Professional Development Specialist works closely with senior HR, Academic, and departmental management in support of the College’s strategic mission. Excels at identifying the current and future skills requirements of the College, and creates flexible learning interventions (through digital and other means) to meet the diverse needs of the workforce. Plans, designs, advises, organizes, prepares and delivers professional development programs to address a wide variety of needs for the College.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Related duties may be assigned.
- Stewards HR’s or Academic Affair’s strategic plan for professional development, ensures objectives/milestones of plan are being met within appropriate timeframe, and makes recommendations to Cabinet regarding proposed revisions/enhancements of strategic plan as needs of College evolve.
- Assesses current and future training and development needs through surveys, interviews, focus groups, and communication with the College Cabinet, departmental leadership, staff, faculty, and instructors.
- Collaborates with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team to ensure that instructional content aligns with the College’s Mission/Vision/Values. Supports the delivery of training content created or procured by the DEI team.
- Collaborates with the ADA Coordinator to ensure that developmental activities are accessible to all members of the intended audience. Supports the delivery of training content created or procured by the ADA Coordinator.
- Collaborates with Cabinet, departmental leaders, and Human Resources Business Partners with the creation and execution of succession planning, annual professional development, and individual performance action plan initiatives.
- Creates, organizes, plans, and presents various forms of onboarding, orientation, and skills training.
- Develops unique training programs to fulfill workers specific needs to maintain or improve job skills.
- Evaluates, creates, presents and/or coordinates training and development programs using various forms and formats including group discussion, lecture, simulations, and videos.
- Creates and/or acquires training procedure manuals, guides, and course materials.
- Provides logistical support of training initiatives as appropriate (e.g. scheduling trainers, scheduling rooms, coordinating technical support, ensuring required equipment/instructional aids/handouts/etc. are available to instructors, etc.).
- Maintains records of training and development activities, attendance, results of tests and assessments, and retraining requirements.
- If assigned to support Faculty, aligns professional development plan to associated curriculum, data analysis, formative summative assessments, implementation strategies, classroom interventions, best practices and modern learning strategies.
- If assigned to support Faculty, observe classroom instruction when requested, research best practices, and make recommendations that support professors/instructors how to implement new strategies that maximize student’s learning outcomes.
- Assesses training materials prepared by instructors (when appropriate) and third party vendors to ensure alignment with the needs of the College.
- Evaluates program effectiveness through assessments, surveys, and feedback.
- Markets and encourages participation in upcoming staff development initiatives and activities.
- Serves as Chair/Co-Chair/Member of committees as appropriate, acting as an advisor for matters related to professional development.
- Manages the College’s Professional Development intranet pages – ensures content is current, easy to navigate, and readily accessible to faculty and staff.
- Maintains knowledge of the latest trends in training and development.
- Regular attendance is expected.

Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Human Resource Management, Education, or closely related field required, with four to six years of experience in a training and development role; four or more additional years of experience may be substituted for individuals who did not complete a Bachelor’s degree. Professional certification (e.g. CPLP, CPTM, PHR, SHRM-CP, etc.) highly desirable. A graduate degree is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent presentation skills.
- Adept with a variety of multimedia training platforms and methods.
- Ability to evaluate and research training options and alternatives.
- Ability to design and implement effective training and development.
- If hired to support Faculty, must have proven experience in: curriculum development/assessments/alignment, data analysis to inform instruction, implementing intervention strategies, teaching adult learners and facilitating groups.
- Strong comprehension of 21st Century skills and learning tools.
- Must have competent hands-on computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft suite of products.
