    Position Summary
    Under the direction of the Director of Student Services. the elementary school counselor is responsible for providing a comprehensive school counseling program that is preventative in design and developmental in implementation and supports RIMSD students in the areas of academic achievement, individual student planning, and personal and social development. The Elementary School Counselor also consults educators, administrators, families, and community partners, and provides individual and group educational and vocational guidance.
    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    • Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about individuals through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources to appraise their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics for vocational and educational planning.
    • Compiles and studies social/emotional, educational, and economic information to aid other professionals in making and carrying out social/emotional and educational objectives.
    • Assists individuals in determining students' references to placement services
    • Assists individuals to understand and overcome social and emotional problems
    • Engages in research and follow-up activities to evaluate counseling techniques
    • Teaches classes
    • Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling programs based on the RIMSD annual student achievement goals and aligned with the American School Counseling Association's (ASCA's) National Standards for School Counseling Programs.
    • Uses the majority of the time to provide direct services to students through preventive and responsive services, including individual student planning, and uses the remaining time in development and management, system, support, and accountability
    • Intervenes during crisis situations and participates in school and district crisis team
    • Designs, implements and assesses the guidance curriculum
    • Assists in preparing students for the transition to the next level: building, grade, or activity
    • Plans and coordinates programs for social/emotional and academic/career development.
    • Develops, monitors, and maintains goals for students' Individual Education Plans (IEP).
    Required Education:
    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in school guidance and/or counseling; related experience and/or training

    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of various cultural backgrounds and ethnicities; shows respect and sensitivity for cultural differences; educates others on the value of diversity; promotes a harassment-free environment; builds a diverse workforce.
    • Follows instructions, responds to management direction; takes responsibility for own actions; keeps commitments; commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals. Completes tasks on time or notifies the appropriate person with an alternate plan.
