Detailed Job Description
Under general supervision, the Benefits Assistant processes all aspects of employee leaves of absence benefits. Creates, updates and maintains accurate records of all disability, FMLA, NYS PFL and worker's compensation claims. Understands and follows federal, state and local laws regarding leave-based benefits. Correctly interprets and communicates University policy as it relates to leave-based benefits, providing excellent customer service to all employees and managers. Reports directly to the Benefits Specialist, serving as back up as necessary.
Responsibilities include:
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of employee leaves, including data entry in HR systems.
    Ability to transfer data accurately from vendor portals to university systems.
  • Works closely with employees and vendors to ensure that all relevant documents are submitted timely for review. Follows up with all parties as necessary. Maintains appropriate contact with employees on leave to assist in coordination of return to work.
  • Provides excellent customer service for employees, ensuring access to relevant information is accurate and timely.
  • Prepares and sends written communications to employees and managers as necessary throughout the lifecycle of the employee's absence.
  • Maintains and produces reports on open claims as needed. Documents and updates all administrative processes.
  • Actively learns and maintains knowledge of university policy, Federal, State and local law as well as administrative requirements necessary to maintain compliance.
  • Assists in the creation and facilitation of leave administration and worker's compensation training programs.
  • Serves as back up to Benefits Specialist when necessary

Department/College Description
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
1 - 2 years experience with employee benefit plans, with a specific focus on Disability, FMLA, NYS Paid Family Leave and Workers Compensation
Specialized skills:
  • Direct experience with short and long-term disability, FMLA, NYS Paid Family Leave and workers compensation programs required.
  • Project management, including the ability to establish and manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast paced, detail-driven environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a high degree of commitment to confidentiality.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Analytical skills
