Roanoke City Public Schools is Hiring a Speech Language Pathologist Near Roanoke, VA

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for diagnosing speech and language disorders and for designing and administering procedures to meet student needs.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude other duties if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this position. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job description. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Keeps required records and promptly and accurately submits reports required by the Principal or Director of Instructional Services.
  • Arranges a meeting with each assigned principal for purchasing necessary instructional supplies for speech and language, as well as with the central office for purchase of diagnostic materials and equipment.
  • Obtains approval from the appropriate principal before sending letters of a school nature to parents or clinics.
  • Attends meetings as requested by the principal or Department of Special Services. Performs duties concerning students/instruction to include:
  • Understands each student's needs, interests, abilities, aptitudes, temperament, and environmental references.
  • Maintains records and information concerning individual students in the prescribed confidential manner and using the records and information only for the purposes for which they are maintained.
  • Remains responsible for the discipline of students under the clinician's care.
  • Remains responsible for the progress of students under the clinician's authority, direction, and supervision.
  • Develops in writing an annual Individual Education Plan for students diagnosed as having impairments in speech and language.
  • Provides consultative services for the regular classroom teacher by demonstrating specific techniques, providing useful materials, conducting workshops for classroom teachers, and working with the teacher in preparing instructional materials.
  • Provides a favorable psychological climate for learning.
  • Within sixty (60) administrative working days of initial enrollment, tests the hearing, speech, and language of all students who are in kindergarten, who are new to the school system, or who are referred by teachers, other professional personnel, or parents.
  • Implements state requirements regarding special education and follows the guidelines and procedures outlined in the Special Services Procedure Manual published by the school division.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must meet state certification guidelines for speech/language disorders.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Frequent walking, standing, light lifting (up to 40 pounds), and other limited physical activities are required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Duties typically performed in school settings to include: classroom, gym, auditorium, recreational areas. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members, parents, and medical professionals may be required. Contact with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.
