Roanoke City Public Schools is Hiring an Occupational Therapist Near Roanoke, VA

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for performing difficult professional work identifying and treating at risk

students in order to minimize the impact of their limitations on their educational and life

pursuits. Actively involved in the evaluation of students with special needs; planning and implementation of service delivery to benefit the students’ access and performance in their educational program; consultation; and education/training of educational team members

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The following duties are typical for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude the other duties if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job description. Other duties may be required and assigned:

  • Planning, collaboration, and scheduling of students receiving related service of Occupational Therapy at assigned schools (OTs average 3-6 schools each)
  • Perform Occupational Therapy evaluations on referred students as requested by IEP teams at assigned schools; develop written reports based on evaluation results, clinical observations, consultations, parent/caregiver input, and teacher interview that capture educational relevance in identified areas of need.
  • Provide direct intervention and/ or consultative services to students receiving the related service of Occupational Therapy at assigned schools
  • Modify intervention based on student’s response and progress towards goals
  • Adhere to and provide the amount, frequency, and duration of Occupational Therapy specified in the IEP
  • Prepare for and attend IEP meetings (addendums, annuals, re-evaluations) for students receiving OT as related service or for those students being considered for OT services
  • Supervision of OT Assistant (COTA) staff members at assigned schools
  • Complete and maintain necessary records of documentation: completing treatment notes, attendance calendar, logging Medicaid for evaluations/treatment/supervisions and creating Plans of Care for Medicaid eligible students
  • Collaborate with educational team members to establish shared/ OT supported goals and objectives for students’ IEPs reflective of identified areas of need
  • Contribute to student progress reports and interim reports in collaboration with educational team
  • Serve as members of RtI teams for at-risk students as requested at assigned schools
  • Select and adapt materials/tools, environment, equipment, technology, assessment, and instructional resources to promote the engagement of students in active learning and development of functional motor skills
  • Participation in developing a student’s 504 plan as requested
  • Provide fieldwork experience to OT and OTA students for Colleges/ Universities under contract (as requested/arranged)
  • Actively involved in professional growth and development opportunities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of school-based practice area; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of providing effective therapy for special needs students; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures as well as special education laws/regulations governing related service provisions; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with OT Assistants, educational staff, students and parents; exceptional organizational, planning and time management skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Graduate of an Occupational Therapy program (Master’s level) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) or predecessor organizations. Individuals with Occupational Therapy experience may be considered with Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy prior to change in requirements to Master’s entry level. Fulfillment of state requirements for licensure, certification, or registration.

National Certification by Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, or evidence of passing the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy national examination.

Licensure by Board of Medicine in Commonwealth of Virginia to practice as Occupational Therapist.

Experience as an Occupational Therapist working in a school-based setting is preferred.
