Job Description Summary The Dispatcher oversees and coordinates freight traffic and off hour’s customer service to ensure that company and customer expectations are met. Communicates with Independent Contractors (I/C) on their availability, match loads with I/C and customers and ensures that all pickups and delivers are met. Critical Job Functions: Review each terminal’s load plan. Answer picks up calls from customers. Prioritize pickups to efficiently use trucks and maximize customer satisfaction. Ensure that all customer pickups are made. Manage pickup and delivery appointments. Give drivers advances to pay for breakdowns and unloading. Administer company policy as needed. Administer tracking system for pickups and delivery. Coordinate freight movement with drivers and freight handlers. Provides assistance and information to Independent Contractors who has broken down notifying origin and destination terminals. Provide safety information to Independent Contractor’s in reference to accidents, breakdowns, and delays. Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge. Other duties as assigned. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Relies on written and verbal communication. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employers of organization. Communicates internally with all corporate office staff, and externally with terminals, line haul contractors, law enforcement and customers. Specific industry or position skills. Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc. Preferred knowledge of AS/400. Experience supervising the selection, training, development and appraisal of personnel and work assignments. Average typing, filing and ten key skills. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Prioritize tasks. Handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Prioritize, organize, and delegate assignments.
