Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Ridgewood Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Cooking instructor at Ridgewood YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Instruct hour long healthy cooking classes for school aged children.
2. Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.

3. Teach basic kitchen skills including washing, cutting, grating, stirring, measuring, nutrition, and more as well as the history, geography, and language behind recipes to kids.

4. Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).

5. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.

6. Organizes and puts away Cooking Class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.

7. Trains and supervises volunteers and aides as assigned.

REQUIRED:

  • Must take Redwoods training and complete a national background and sex offender check with Ridgewood YMCA
  • Current ServSafe Food Handler Certification or willingness to obtain before teaching.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and explain basic skills that are being taught to multiple ages and be inclusive of all.
  • Ability to manage and engage a group of 8-10 children.
  • Experience working with children

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to solve problems and see projects and curriculum through to completion in class time

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to exchange accurate information while frequently communicating with supervisor, staff and members.
  • Moderate lifting and physical effort required lifting cooking equipment

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.00 - $26.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday

License/Certification:

  • ServSafe (Preferred)
