What You Will Do 

Junior Staff Accountants handle general ledger accounting, general financial and administrative support, and assist with the analysis of data. Key responsibilities include providing support to other members of the Finance team, as well as customer service support to other teams. They are responsible for fulfilling all of the responsibilities below along with other duties as assigned.

Requirements

 Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required.
  • Insurance Industry experience a plus.
  • Proficient in Excel and Word, with Tableau a plus

Technical Responsibilities

  • Understand the basic principles of accounting as well as common accounting standards and office procedures.
  • Utilize accounting software, Imageright, Microsoft Office and other programs such as internal policy administrative systems.
  • Apply critical thinking in preparing reports and provide a primary analysis of business transactions.
  • Clearly organize data and identify any financial discrepancies.
  • Assist the Underwriting Department with customer inquiries and stop payments with the bank or payment processor.
  • Process daily disbursement checks in the accounting system.
  • Upload daily bank deposit files and reconcile with system reports.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations and basic journal entries.
  • Interface with the Claims Department to ensure manual checks and subrogation entries are correct.
  • Identify issues and assist with solutions.
  • Assist with monthly journal entries.
  • Assist with regulatory filings as needed.
  • Provide clear and ongoing communication to Senior Accountant and Finance Director. 
  • Continuously develop knowledge and expertise (e.g., keep skills current).
  • Conduct activities in compliance with applicable Federal & State laws, and company regulations and guidelines.

Analytical Responsibilities

  • Critically analyze information to identify discrepancies (i.e., is this right?), question assumptions (why are we doing this?), and identify improvement opportunities (how can we do better?).
  • Make informed decisions considering data, options, and potential impacts.
  • Prepare written materials that are clear, supported by facts, and contain proper spelling and grammar. 
  • Develop creative or innovative solutions for problems. 
  • Use accounting skills for problem-solving.

Teamwork Responsibilities

  • Treat all team members with respect and courtesy.
  • Take steps to manage your own conflicts with others by remaining calm and solution-focused; elevate conflicts when assistance is needed for resolution.
  • Communicate work updates to those affected in a timely manner. 
  • Share ideas or feedback in team meetings and cross-department efforts. 
  • Share advice knowledge, and experience with less experienced staff.
  • Assist other team members (e.g., with heavy workloads; provide guidance) to ensure work is completed in a timely and effective manner.
  • Help ensure a working environment free from discrimination and harassment by promptly reporting any allegations of discrimination and/or harassment to management.

Customer Service Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate professionalism when interacting with customers (e.g., appropriate tone, language, and attire).
  • Maintain composure and focus on solutions when working with upset or frustrated customers.
  • Ask the “right” questions for moving the issue (e.g., claims, problems) toward a solution.
  • Clearly communicate relevant and accurate information.
  • Solve issues using the most direct and expedient approach.
  • Adhere to Responsive’ s customer service standards and guidelines.

Work Management Responsibilities

  • Produce work, products, or services within deadlines.
  • Prioritize tasks to ensure the timely delivery of products or services.
  • Respond with appropriate urgency to requests (calls, e-mails, etc.).
  • Capably shift work priorities when needed to meet demands or resource constraints.
  • Anticipate potential obstacles and bring issues to the attention of others (e.g., supervisor, team members).
