Position Summary:

Develops, plans, maintains research analysis and databases for the Institute on Aging and the Department of Management, Policy and Community Health (MPACH). Oversees the general running of research activities in the Institute on Aging and MPACH. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to strategic operations, communications, research infrastructure development, program management, and other special project development in order to ensure the sustainability of a strong research infrastructure. Oversees research coordinator activities such as grant proposal development, IRB submissions and regulatory oversight of projects, manuscript submission, study participant recruitment, and generates project reports. Will assist the Department Administrator with research staff coordination activities, faculty liaisons, and research coordinator staff hiring and supervision.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Manages the research agenda for the Institute and the Department. Oversees research program infrastructure activities that coordinate with pre- and post-awards officials.
  2. Set deadlines, assign responsibilities, monitor the progress of projects, and provide supervision and guidance to the research personnel, including research coordinators, administrative support staff, and graduate research students within the Institute and the Department.
  3. Manages internal and external partnerships between clinicians and research scientists at the University.
  4. Manages the annual budget and is responsible for the overall fiscal management of the program. Negotiates service contracts, reports on progress, and authorizes expenditures.
  5. Informs upper management of key activities.
  6. Assists in grant proposals to both private foundations and governmental agencies. May work closely with the Office of Sponsored Projects on the submission of grants.
  7. May conduct or supervise research-related training for internal, hospital, and community groups.
  8. Develop ongoing strategic plans for the area.
  9. Communicate with the community and professionals to share objectives and outcomes. Prepares/makes oral presentations at professional meetings. May also participate in committees deemed appropriate for the Institute and the Department.
  10. Provides consultative expertise regarding policy and/or regulatory questions.
  11. Gives direct input for direct reports regarding recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and project budget planning.
  12. Stays abreast of new and updated protocols for the Institute and the Department.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned to enhance aging research and promote clinical innovation within the Institute and the Department.

Certification/Skills:

Depending on research may require advanced level grant writing skills.
Depending on research may require Registered Nurse within the State of Texas.
Depending on research may require Clinical Research Coordinator certification.
May require program specific certifications.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree in science or a health administration related field.

Minimum Experience:

Seven years of applicable experience.
May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects. 
This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
