Research Foundation Suny is Hiring a Postdoctoral Associate (R23-19) Near Albany, NY

The Postdoctoral Researcher classification in the SUNY system is considered a temporary advanced scholarly appointment, typically representing a transition from academic study to employment in the field of research. The purpose of this appointment is to benefit the research and educational programs of the university as well as contribute to the postdoctoral scholar's own professional growth. In this classification, the incumbent with an appropriate terminal degree will be employed to carry out advanced independent and/ or directed research to achieve the objectives of research projects directed by Jeannette Sutton, Associate Professor in the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity at the University at Albany.

This position is located at the University at Albany, SUNY in Albany, NY.

The postdoc position will initially be for one year and may be renewed for one additional year.

What you will do:
The postdoctoral researcher will have primary responsibility for research on "viewer preferences for next-generation media content during severe weather" and will contribute to additional projects with a focus on risk communication across a range of hazards. The researcher will conduct theoretically based, mixed method (quantitative and qualitative),
interdisciplinary research on message design for visual risk communication, the results of which will guide implementation and practice among practitioners.

Key responsibilities:
  • Work with the PI and collaborators to meet research goals across multiple federally funded projects.
  • Contribute to discussions with academic, federal, state, and local partners.
  • Collaborate with research partners to develop visual risk communication stimuli for laboratory testing; develop theoretically informed data collection instruments to assess cognitive and perceptual outcomes.
  • Conduct and integrate literature reviews on visual risk communication, user design and ergonomics, cognitive psychology, and severe weather.
  • Recruit study participants: collect eye tracking, think aloud, and survey data.
  • Analyze data and write up results for presentations and publications.
  • Mentor graduate student researchers.
Learning Objectives:
This appointment will enhance the postdoc's ability to conduct applied social science research to help solve risk communication messaging problems. Under the guidance of Dr. Sutton, the postdoc may gain experience in this area by:
  • Contributing to the develop and application of social theories about risk communication, imminent threats, and messaging through the use of social science research methods (literature reviews, survey design, experimental design, data collection, content coding, focus groups, interviews)
  • Communicating social science to diverse audiences (through articles, reports, conference poster, and presentations)
  • Exposure to emerging research areas at the intersection of digital communication technologies, cognitive psychology, usability, risk communication, and disasters.

The postdoc will also have the latitude to exercise independent initiative, innovation, and judgment in her/his research. The postdoc may have the opportunity to interact with research partners in federal agencies, state and local government, academia, and community stakeholders. The postdoc may also have the opportunity to attend technical meetings and
workshops to present research.


Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have relevant content knowledge about theories related to disaster, risk, or crisis communication (including health, decision making, behavioral change), usability, human factors, or cognitive psychology; demonstrated proficiency with quantitative and qualitative methods including interviews and focus groups, content analysis, experimental design, and survey research; demonstrated data analytics skills relevant to risk communication
in the U.S. context. The candidate will also demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills evidenced by a record of publications and professional talks. It's helpful to have previous experience with computer programming and/or an interest in learning this skill in the future.

A doctoral degree in an appropriate field or discipline is required by the start of the position (no more than 3 years from the date of hire). We encourage applications from candidates in a variety of different fields, including (but not limited to) communication, informatics, sociology, cognitive psychology, emergency management, and human factors.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strongly desired is a background in visual or user design and knowledge or experience with severe weather.
It's also important to demonstrate curiosity, creativity, a desire to learn, and the ability to work well with a large and interdisciplinary team of researchers.
