Position Summary:

The Optometry Technician is responsible for both technician and optician duties, and will assist with general clerical duties to assist the scheduler as the need arises and time allows. Optician duties involve patient frame and lens selection, and assisting the Lead Technician with orders for eye wear and organization of the Optical Dispensary. Technician duties involve pre-testing and getting a patient ready to see the provider, much like a medical assistant. Daily oversight will be provided by the Optometry manager.

Optician Duties:

• Patient frame and lens selection

• Verifying if patients qualify for the Eye Glass programs funded by RSIC, IHS, or the Diabetes grants

• Verifying glasses were made correctly after receipt from the lab

• Dispensing glasses to patients

• Routine maintenance and adjustments of eyewear

• Assisting Lead Technician with paperwork/invoices tracking money going in and out and records of all orders

• Assisting Lead Technician in checking in on every order to see if Medicaid or other alternate resource has been approved and received

• Electronic charting and coding as needed for patient encounters

• Assists with billing for eyeglass programs and outside insurance

Technician duties:

• Monitor waiting room Optometry patients and coordinate patient flow for the provider.

• Perform visual field exams using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer

• Perform optic nerve head or macula/retinal scans using Optovue Avanti Optical Coherence Tomographer

• Perform autorefraction on the Topcon KR 8000PA Auto-Kerato-Refractometer, non-contact tonometry on the Reichert 7, blood pressure, and lensometry on every full exam patient prior to the patient seeing the doctor

• Perform corneal topography using the Topcon CA-800

• Use fundus camera to take photos for retinal exams.

• Lead contact lens insertion and removal training for new contact lens wearers as well as contact lens care and hygiene review for all contact lens wearers

• Attend meetings, workshops, and training as required by the immediate supervisor

• Electronic charting and coding as needed for patient encounters

General Clerical Duties-Assists with these duties as clinic demand necessitates (such as patient representative out ill or on vacation)

• Interview all patients and assist with intake demographics by obtaining, recording and verifying third party information.

• Return patients phone calls in a timely and courteous manner

• Contact patients with messages from the provider

• Assist with receipt of CHS notes not received from referral appointments

• Nextgen scheduling

• Assist with sending confirmation letters and reminder calls before scheduled appointments

• Verifying patient eligibility

• Filing

• Dispense post-mydriatic glasses if patient was dilated

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must have a high school diploma or a GED.

• REQUIRED Two years of experience working as a licensed or certified optician, apprentice optician, or optician’s assistant

• ABO/NCLE certifications strongly preferred

• REQUIRED Proficiency using a manual lensometer

• Two years of experience in working in the Optometry field with background in Medical terminology, visual field exams, referrals, customer service, and familiar with insurance companies and benefits

• Must have basic knowledge and experience with basic office equipment.

• Computer literate

• Must be certified or learn to operate the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer for visual field testing

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

• Must be bondable.

• Must pass a recent TB test

• Must be able to pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug screen and pass a PL 101-630 Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Act background check.

• Must be able to work in a diverse minority environment

• Must have a current CPR certification or obtain one within 6 months

• Indian Preference applies.

Pay: $25.00 - $26.59 per hour
