Regis College is Hiring a Sergeant - Part Time Near Weston, MA

Summary

Under the general supervision of the Deputy Police Chief, the Police Sergeant is responsible for shift supervision, the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of laws and departmental directives.


Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for supervising Campus Police Officers, Campus Safety Officers, Dispatchers, and Contract Security Officers, and holding them accountable for the quality of their work including efficiency, discipline, appearance, and general good conduct.
  • Assume some administrative responsibility of the Campus Police Department as a member of the supervisory team.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all members and guests of the University community.
  • Patrol campus buildings, grounds, and properties used, owned, and leased by Regis College.
  • Enforce state laws, University policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Conduct comprehensive investigations when responding to accidents, complaints, crimes, and other issues, and prepare concise and complete reports.
  • Provide first aid and emergency first responder medical assistance.
  • Facilitate the movement of people and vehicles, including the enforcement of traffic regulations; control and redirect traffic in scenes of emergency or danger; promote traffic safety; and enforce parking restrictions.
  • Maintain close communications with Resident Life staff, Physical Plant, and other community members.
  • Delegate tasks and assign duties to staff.


Other Responsibilities:

  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Successfully complete annual in-service training as required.
  • Specialized training as required.


Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Shift supervision of Campus Police Officers, Campus Safety Officers, Dispatchers, and Contract Security Officers, as assigned.


Position Requirements:


Preferred:

  • Five years' experience as a full-time police officer, preferred.
  • Supervisory experience in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field, preferred.


Required:

  • Graduate of full time Municipal Police Academy Training certified and approved by the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) (or equivalent, as determined by the Chief of Police and MPTC/POST).
    • An associate’s degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. (Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.)
    • A bachelor’s degree or higher, with a major in police science, law enforcement, or criminal justice, may be substituted for the required experience. (Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.)
  • Candidate must currently be a certified police officer in Massachusetts per MPTC/POST standards and obtain/maintain their certification through their employment.
  • Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in a police force or in law enforcement work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the below.
    • Must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a MA License to Carry Firearms (M.G.L.c.140, section 131) without restrictions. (Failure to maintain will be subject to dismissal).
    • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License. (Failure to maintain will be subject to dismissal).
    • CPR/AED/First Responder certification; current and valid.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern public safety and police procedures in the areas of patrol, communications and dispatching, emergency medical services, investigation, and crime prevention, with a demonstrated understanding of the laws of arrest and criminal procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal communications, decision-making, and teamwork skills; ability to remain calm, composed, friendly, cooperative, tactful, honest, and ethical.
  • Adept at written communication with the ability to prepare accurate written reports, and work in an organized manner.
  • Ability to appropriately maintain confidential and sensitive information.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work various shifts including overnight hours, (11pm -7am); evening, (3pm -11pm) and daytime, (7am-3pm).
  • Requires frequent and extended periods of outside work, subject to all weather conditions and extremes.
  • Unpredictable and sometimes strenuous periods of physical activity such as climbing, bending, standing, and lifting.
  • May spend extended periods at terminal, on telephone, or operating other office machines requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
  • May be subjected to loud noises, including discharging firearms and police sirens.
