JOB TITLE: Operating Room Nurse-Circulator

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUITES: Responsible for patient care in the facility from pre op, through operating room and recovery area.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to OR supervisor.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting weights in excess of fifty pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate different equipment. Requires normal range of hearing, eyesight, and speaking ability to read and interpret written materials and to interact appropriately with others including physicians, anesthesia personnel, patients, and coworkers.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a surgical practice environment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This list may not include all duties performed.)

• Provides nursing and medical care to patients in preparation for surgery, during surgery and recovery phase.
• Makes Pre-operative telephone calls for evaluation and appointment times.
• Performs pre-op evaluation of patient charts (appropriate forms, consents signed)
• Performs admitting evaluation and teaching.
• Administers pre-op / post-op medication under direction of physician.
• Monitors patient’s vital signs
• Preps patient for surgery
• Performs all duties of circulation and recovery room nurse.
• Performs needle and sponge count with surgical technologist.
• Maintains a safe, sterile environment in recovery and operating room in compliance with

professional and facility guidelines

• Assists in cleaning OR and preparing for to follow case.
• Provides patient education and follow-up care instructions to patients and family members.

• Performs daily narcotic count with CRNA.
• Maintains patient confidentiality.
• Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Ability to communicate clearly with patients, family members, physicians, and staff.

Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing.

Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly in emergency situations.

Demonstrates technical proficiencies in operating OR equipment.

Exercises professional judgment in providing patient care.

Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA policy and procedures.

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing

Current licensure as RN in State of TN

Three or more years’ experience in preoperative, operating room, or recovery room setting. (Preferred but not required.)

Current BLS certification

ACLS certification required.
