POSITION DESCRIPTION
Special Education Aide
Overview:
The Special Education Aide, under the supervision of the Director of Student Services and coordination with the site principals, general education teachers, provides support to students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and general education students who need support. The Special Education Aide assists in large or small group instruction or in individual assistance, across all educational settings. The site principal will evaluate the employee with input from the appropriate supervising teachers.

Knowledge of:
Basic reading, math, and writing skills.
Ability to:
1. Demonstrate tolerant, accepting attitude toward all students and communicate respectfully and effectively with students and other staff members
2. Demonstrate willingness to carry out teacher-designed instructional procedures;
3. Assist the teacher in meeting the educational needs of students enrolled in the RSP and/or SDC program
4. Communicate effectively orally and in writing positively with student and adults
5. Demonstrate a commitments to provide the assistance for student to be a productive member of their classroom
6. Facilitate social relationships between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers
7. Apply positive management techniques for small groups in classroom, school, and community settings
8. Acquisition of a First Aid certificate, including training in CPR.

Environment: Indoor and outdoor instructional environments.
Physical Abilities: Hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to monitor students; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned equipment; bending at the waist to assist students; kneeling or crouching; ability to stand for long periods; ability to walk long distances; perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 25 pounds; is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
Hazards: Exposure to climatic elements and noise; potential for contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases; frequent interruptions.
