Job Summary
As a Facilities Associate, you will play a pivotal role in our thrift stores operations, taking on diverse responsibilities. Your daily tasks will encompass a wide range of physically demanding duties, including heavy lifting, material handling, and equipment operation. From ensuring the cleanliness and organization of our store to operating machinery to compact and transport recyclable materials, your role is as dynamic as it is strenuous. Your dedication to maintaining the efficiency and safety of our facility is pivotal to our success, making you an essential part of our team.
The Facilities Associate may be assigned to various areas of the business, each with its own unique challenges and contributions. Below is a brief description of each role.
Baler: A baler's primary responsibility is to oversee the efficient operation of the baler machine. This entails collecting and sorting materials, such as clothing, textiles, cardboard, or plastics, and feeding them into the baler's hopper. Baler’s need to monitor the machine's controls to ensure it applies the appropriate amount of pressure to compact the materials into tight bales. Additionally, they’re responsible for securely tying and labeling the resulting bales before moving them to designated storage areas. Safety is paramount, so they need to follow strict guidelines and protocols to prevent accidents and maintain the equipment. Their role not only helps maximize storage space and streamline operations but also contributes to the thrift store's sustainability efforts by facilitating recycling and waste reduction.
Trailer Loader / Unloader: The primary task of a trailer loader / unloader is to safely and efficiently load and unload items from delivery trucks or trailers. This can include furniture, boxes of clothing and household goods, electronics, and other donated items. They sort and organize items, document arrivals, and safely move merchandise to designated areas within the store. Communication with the team, adherence to safety protocols, and following store procedures are essential aspects of their role. Trailer unloaders contribute to the seamless processing of items, while maintaining a safe work environment.
Janitor: Janitors typically have a range of responsibilities related to maintaining the store's cleanliness, organization, and overall appearance. Their duties often include cleaning and sanitizing various areas of the thrift store, including the sales floor, restrooms, break rooms, and common areas. This involves tasks like sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and wiping down surfaces. They regularly empty trash bins and recycling containers, ensuring that waste is properly disposed of and recycling is separated. Janitors may retrieve shopping carts or baskets from the store's entrance or parking area and return them to their designated locations for customer use.
Trash Compactor Operator: The Trash Compactor Operator plays a crucial role in managing waste efficiently and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. This individual is responsible for operating and maintaining the trash compactor equipment, ensuring the proper disposal of discarded items, and compacting waste materials to optimize space.

Key Responsibilities
  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain various equipment, including baler machines, trash compactors, and janitorial tools, ensuring they function safely and efficiently
  • Material Handling: Handle heavy lifting and material sorting, including clothing, textiles, cardboard, plastics, furniture, electronics, and other donated items, while adhering to safety guidelines
  • Waste Management: Properly manage waste disposal by operating trash compactors, emptying trash bins, and separating recyclables to support the store's sustainability efforts
  • Cleaning: Maintain store cleanliness by performing janitorial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing various areas.
  • Store Maintenance: Perform minor maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, fixing minor plumbing issues, or addressing small repairs to keep the store in good working condition.
  • Organization: Organize and sort donated items, ensuring items are placed in designated areas and documentation of arrivals is accurate
  • Safety: Follow strict safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and maintain a safe work environment
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with team members, following store procedures and coordinating with colleagues to streamline operations
Qualifications
  • Previous thrift, retail, warehouse, or back of house experience is preferred, but not required
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to Safely Perform Job Functions: Capable of safely and effectively performing essential job functions in accordance with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting both qualitative and quantitative productivity requirements.
  • Physical Strength: Must have the ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 70 lbs, frequently exert up to 25 lbs. of force, and constantly apply negligible force when handling objects.
  • Endurance: Able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Manual Dexterity: Proficient in performing repetitive motions such as extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction and working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Skilled in tasks involving seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands.
  • Balance and Agility: Capable of maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces, as well as maintaining balance when performing agile tasks.
  • Visual Acuity: Possesses clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.

Language Requirements
  • Employees are not required to communicate exclusively in English within the workplace. Scheduling Requirements
  • Facilities Associates are typically scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 7am - 3:30pm
