Employee Benefits Specialist

LOCATION: Tribal Administration Office

SALARY: Negotiable

SUPERVISOR: Human Resources Director

THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Human Resources Director, the Employee Benefits Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the employee health insurance, dental, short term and long-term disability, retirement, life insurance programs/benefit and be responsible for the workers compensation program/insurance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide employee benefits information to the tribal government employees.

2. To work with the Human Resources Director and/or Chief Financial Officer and others to ensure the employee benefits program is implemented in a cost effective, efficient, and professional manner.

3. To do all manner of things necessary to the implementation of a cost-effective employee benefits program.

4. To implement the duties and responsibilities necessary to the condition of those employee benefits as authorized by the tribal government for eligible tribal employees.

5. Serve as a point of contact for all employee benefits-related matters.

6. Serve as a point of contact for those individuals seeking information and/or assistance relating to their eligibility for benefits.

7. To receive and process all employee benefit applications for eligible employees; to enroll and terminate in a timely manner all employees in accord with the adopted plan document; to provide information and distribute Policy Manuals on an needed basis to all plan enrollees.

8. To assist those individuals in need of services and/or assistance in relation to their eligibility for benefits.

9. Responsible for informing employees of eligibility, verifying validity of claim forms and maintaining benefit records.

10. Responsible for the development and maintenance of a filing system which safeguards benefits related records and data. To make sure that the data entry into the various computer systems used to maintain employee benefit information is being done.

11. To submit all necessary billings and reports to the proper departments for processing.

12. Responsible for providing communication within the workplace for all employees that are a part of the employee benefits programs.

13. The above duties and responsibilities are not an all-inclusive list but rather a general representation of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position. The duties and responsibilities will be subject to change based on organizational needs and/or deemed necessary by the supervisor.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: None

KNOWLEDGE:

1. The ability to, interpret and understand health insurance policies.

2. Must be trustworthy, able to maintain strict confidentiality of information and have the ability to work cooperatively with people.

3. Well organized and be a self-starter, conscientious and very reliable; requires little supervision.

4. Must be able to present both in writing and orally, reports to tribal government and those people and entities the tribe deals with in relation to their employee benefits programs.

5. Must have knowledge of computers, office machines, telephone skills and customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Minimum of two years’ experience/knowledge of employee benefit programs in general; knowledge/experience can be gained from a combination of on-the-job work experience and through education, preferred.

2. Minimum of high school diploma, HSED or GED required.

3. An Associate Degree in Human Resources or related field; preferred.

4. Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain driver’s eligibility as a condition of employment. Be eligible to be put on the tribe’s vehicle insurance policy. Preferred.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Daily contact with Human Resource Director, Tribal Management, staff, community members, and various agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds. There will be some bending, lifting and reaching in overhead storage, but mostly sedentary work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: All tribal buildings are smoke free.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Will be required to attend training and meetings both in state and out of state. Attend Tribal Council meetings as directed.

Respect and consideration given to the dignity of each customer, visitor and fellow employee is a requisite of successful job performance. Any behavior or attitude that tarnishes the name or image of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will be subject to immediate disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Indian preference will be applied in the case of equally qualified applicants, but all qualified applicants will be considered.
