Peer Recovery Specialist

GENERAL NATURE OF POSITION: A Peer Recovery Specialist is a professional who uses their personal experience with recovery from substance use, mental health, or co-occurring conditions to support others in their recovery journey. They are an integral part of the healthcare team, providing emotional support, sharing knowledge, teaching skills, and providing practical assistance to help individuals recover from their conditions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide emotional support and understanding to individuals in recovery.
  • Share personal experiences of recovery to inspire hope and provide practical guidance.
  • Assist individuals in identifying their personal goals for recovery and develop a recovery plan.
  • Teach strategies and skills to manage recovery and cope with challenges.
  • Connect individuals with resources and services, such as housing, employment, healthcare, and support groups.
  • Advocate for the needs and rights of individuals in recovery.
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to support the recovery of individuals.
  • Maintain records of interactions and progress.
  • Continue professional development and education to enhance the effectiveness of peer support.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Personal experience with recovery from substance use, mental health, or co-occurring conditions.
  • Completion of a recognized peer specialist training program.
  • Certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist, if required by the state.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for clients' rights and personal preferences.
  • Knowledge of resources and services in the community.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with other professionals.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Must be able to ascend and descend up to three flights of stairs throughout the course of a normal workday.
  • Occasionally required to stand and walk.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Peer Recovery Certification
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • CPR and First Aid
  • Employment contingent upon a clear fingerprint and criminal history record.
