    Position Title: Nurse for Special Education and Health Room Support

    Classification: RSSSA
    Position Range: Range 4

    Reports To: Certified School Nurse, Building Principal, Coordinator of School Health, Director of Student Services
    Position Goals: To assist the certified school nurse in providing care and completing mandated services to maximize student participation in the school environment.
    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties. All duties must be completed according to current policies and procedures.
    • Provides care to students in assigned classrooms according to students’ physician orders and individualized health care plans under direction of the certified school nurse. Care may include but is not exclusive to:
      • Basic First Aid
      • Medication administration per the Nurse Practice Act and District policies and procedures
      • Tube Feedings
      • Urinary Catheterization
      • Lift Assists
      • Emergency care
    • Provides services during extended school year and summer school programs under the direction of an appropriate supervisor and/or administrator including, but not limited to, the Coordinator of School Health and the Director of Student Services.
    • Completes documentation of nursing care per nursing standards and District policies and procedures.
    • Assists with the completion of mandated screenings, including the referral to the certified school nurse of all screening failures.
    • Facilitates communications between parents/guardians and the Certified School Nurse regarding student illnesses and injuries, referrals and appointments, and health information updates per nursing standards and District procedures.
    • Completes tasks related to the documentation and maintenance of health records as assigned by the Certified School Nurse and Coordinator of Health Services, including but not exclusive to:
      • Documentation of immunizations, screenings, referrals and physicals.
      • Creation and maintenance of health records.
      • Access billing records.
    • Assists with storage, inventory, distribution and management of supplies necessary for the care of students in the designated rooms, as directed.
    • Assists with the maintenance of the health room under the direction of the Certified School Nurse.
    • Maintains strict confidentiality of all school health matters.
    • Reports the following situations or conditions to the Certified School Nurse: reports of child abuse/neglect, suspected illegal substance use or abuse, communicable diseases, need for individual health counseling, referral and follow-up of medical problems and other as directed by the school nurse or administrators.
    • Communicates with health care providers according to Nurse Practice Act scope of practice and Reading School District policy and procedures as directed by the Certified School Nurse.
    • Maintains current knowledge of immunization requirements according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health and provisional status of enrolled students.
    • Maintains an effective schedule in order to complete tasks in the classroom and health room.
    • Collaborates with others in the Health Services Department, and classroom//building staff.
    • Attends regularly-scheduled meetings and professional development as required by District policies and procedures.
    • Participates in IEP, 504 or other family meetings as requested by special education staff, school nurse or administration.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee. This job description does not constitute an exhaustive list of responsibilities and management may revise it at any time.
    Note - This position is not certified to provide supplemental instruction in any classes or school staff development services regarding collegial studies/skills. The position holder will not work under a PA Certificate as a School Nurse.
    QUALIFICATIONS
    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
    • High School Diploma or G.E.D., required.
    • Completion of Practical Nursing Program or State-Approved Registered Nursing Program.
    • Previous experience working with people with disabilities ages 4 to 21 preferred.
    • Previous experience in health related field preferred
    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
    • Valid nursing license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Board of Nursing:
      • Current Registered Nurse (preferred) or Licensed Practical Nurse
    • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license
    • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
    LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    • Ability to communicate clearly, distinctly and courteously with students, parents / guardians and staff in person and via email and telephone.
    • Ability to communicate as a member of a team.
    • Ability to write utilizing basic grammar skills.
    • Ability to read correspondence
    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    • Ability to work basic mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Able to stand for extended periods of time.
    • Able to sit at a desk or table for extended periods of time.
    • Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, grasping.
    • Able to lift up to 50 pounds, with assistance as needed.
    • High level of manual dexterity.
    • Use of hands in fine motor activity.
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 mos, non-exempt position. As per terms and conditions set forth in the contract between the School District of Reading School Supervisory/Support Associaion, (RSSSA)
