Ravalli County is Hiring a Jury Deputy/Bailiff Near Hamilton, MT

Position: Jury Deputy/Bailiff Classification: Part-time - 24 hours per week

Department: Clerk of District Court Reports to: Clerk/Chief Deputy

Position Grade: Grade 8 Rate of Pay: $16.44/hour

Position Schedule: Mon – Fri (24 hours per week) Benefit Eligible: PERS/pro-rated leave accrual

Department Overview: The District Court is a court of general jurisdiction that handles criminal, civil, domestic relations, juvenile, probate, mental health, and water cases. The county District Court provides the citizens of the County an open, fair, efficient, and independent judiciary for the advancement of justice under the law as prescribed by Montana Statute.

Job Summary:

The primary function of this position is to complete all tasks related to jury including, but not limited to, serving as the bailiff in trials. Applicant will be responsible for pulling the juries, sending out summons for specified trials, tracking and communicating with jurors prior to trial, updating juror records in the trial management system, and ensuring a sufficient number or jurors for the jury selection process. Applicant will also be responsible for the annual jury draw in May of each year with ongoing records retention training for the disposal of superseded jury records.

The Clerk of District Court is the official keeper of all District Court records for the county and is responsible for performing a multitude of considerably difficult, wide-ranging clerical duties with accuracy, timeliness and with respect to confidentiality. These records include Adoption, Civil, Criminal, Dependent Neglect, Domestic Relations, Guardianship, Juvenile, Paternity, Probate and Sanity cases. The Clerk also issues, files and records all county marriage license applications and licenses. This office also processes passports.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Accurately perform all in court and in office duties as set forth in the Bailiff training manual.
  • Act as a custodian of District Court jury documents and records.
  • Conduct necessary research via voter registration list, computer, databases, indexes, files, and dockets to maintain a list of qualified jurors, juror attendance, and related forms.
  • Pull individual and annual jury panels.
  • Mail and/or distribute documents as directed.
  • Issue official court documents including but not limited to Sheriff Summons and notices per state statutes.
  • Maintain Jury Log and document all trials in accordance with office policy.
  • Track and maintain up to date jury lists
  • Provide pre-voir dire and final voir dire to counsel in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist with juror check in and act as courtroom bailiff for each trial.
  • Maintain accurate and timely jury records retention and disposal per statute and LGRC schedules 1 and 12.
  • Perform routine administrative work with efficiency, accuracy, confidentiality and in accordance with standard operating procedures and laws. This includes answering phones, receiving the public, providing customer assistance, performing data entry and word processing, processing mail pertaining to jury, and processing outgoing mail as needed.
  • File and maintain all court and legal documents, papers, and related documentation appropriately in accordance with applicable statutes and office procedures.
  • Provide ease of access to records for authorized interested parties.
  • Provide tactful and courteous customer service to the citizens of the County by greeting and assisting the public in a professional manner that reflects the proper respect and impartiality of the judicial system.
