POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Counselor
DEPARTMENT: Program Services
STATUS: Full- Time Exempt, and/or Part-Time Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Program Services
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Counselor position is to provide counseling and related services to clients who have been impacted by sexual abuse or domestic violence, reflecting the strategic direction and mission of the organization.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. COUNSELING: Provides counseling to primary and secondary victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
2. ADVOCACY: Advocates for clients needing professional support outside of the organization.
3. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Fosters professional growth and teamwork to ensure quality services to clients.
4. COMMUNITY RELATIONS: Fosters relationships that strengthen the organization’s ability to serve victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Master’s degree in counseling, social work or related field
· Current licensure
· Minimum of one year of counseling or related experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
· Extensive understanding of the dynamics and impact of sexual and domestic violence
· Excellent verbal and written communications skills
· Collaborative work style
· Excellent active listening skills
· Excellent critical thinking skills
· Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
DIRECT REPORTS: NA
RESPONSIBILITIES
COUNSELING: Provides counseling to primary and secondary victims of sexual and domestic violence.
· Provides assessments, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions for individual clients, including children
· Provides individual counseling to clients
· Facilitates group counseling
· Assists advocates with walk-ins and crisis calls
· Establishes and maintains collateral contact with clients
· Manages counseling schedule
· Maintains client files, i.e. case notes, treatment plans, etc.
· Completes documentation of services for agency/grant requirements
· Provides narrative accounts of client situations for marketing and development purposes
ADVOCACY: Provides crisis intervention for clients and advocates for those needing professional support outside the organization
· Provides expert witness testimony
· Attends meetings on a client’s behalf
· Assists advocacy department with walk-ins and crisis calls
· Facilitates client referrals to community resources
· Provides public education, consultation and training with other agencies and schools in the areas of sexual and domestic assault
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Fosters professional growth and teamwork to ensure quality service to clients.
· Researches and develops therapeutic interventions and assessment tools
· Participates in individual and group supervision and clinical case staffing
· Provides training to advocates and new staff
· Maintains ethical standards and licensure
COMMUNITY RELATIONS: Fosters relationships that strengthen the organization’s ability to serve victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
· Seeks, fosters and maintains collaborative relationships with community partners
· Represents the organization at designated events, meetings, task forces, etc. to advance the ability of the organization to effectively serve clients
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
This work is primarily sedentary, requiring communicating clearly, seeing, hearing, talking, concentrating, reading and operating office equipment such as a computer, calculator, copier and scanner. Work is primarily in a climate controlled area with office equipment level of noise.
Some travel is required.
EVALUATION
The performance of the Counselor will be evaluated annually by the Director of Program Services according to pre-determined objectives and policies.
