Rainier Scholars is Hiring a Call for Proposals: Elective Instructor Near Tacoma, WA

Call for Proposals!

Rainier Scholars - Tacoma is seeking members of the Tacoma community to teach elective courses during our Summer Stretch Academy.

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

Rainier Scholars cultivates the academic and leadership potential of underrepresented students of color through rigorous, transformative opportunities that increase college graduation rates and empower new generations of leaders in the greater Seattle and Tacoma communities. Founded in 2000, our comprehensive 12-year program starts in fifth grade and provides personalized academic, mental health, leadership, and career development supports to students and their families. We believe that by systematically removing barriers to a college education, we are working to ensure that students of color are afforded the same opportunities as their classmates.

With two sites in Seattle and Tacoma, a budget of nearly $9 million, a staff of more than 50 full-time team members and more than 950 scholars and families currently served, Rainier Scholars is poised for accelerated growth and impact.

SUMMARY:

Rainier Scholars – Tacoma launched in late spring 2021 and welcomed its first cohort during the summer of June 2022 and was designed as a unique public-school partnership that collaborates alongside fellow educators to improve the outcomes of students who face the biggest barriers to success. We work towards the larger goal of expanding opportunities for everyone by centering the experiences of Multi-Generational African Americans, a group facing a highly complex set of barriers due to the country’s history of enslavement and segregation, in our program design.

Elective courses in our Summer Stretch session play an important role in our integrated, comprehensive approach, allowing 9-11 year old students to participate in “non-traditional” learning environments, explore potential new areas of interest or pursue a current passion, and engage their bodies and minds in different ways. We are open to exploring a wide range of options and are particularly interested in the arts, sports/martial arts, computer science, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Facilitate a total of 10 sessions across 5 weeks, split into two halves. Sessions will be offered for one group of students for the first 2 ½ weeks, then repeated for a new group of students for the second half. Sessions will run Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:40-3:00 pm at First Creek Middle School, starting the week of July 9th - August 8th. Class sizes will vary depending on interest.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with young people
  • Successful completion of a background check
  • Proposal of planned activities and itemized budget* (if applicable)

Rainier Scholars will be able to provide some materials and equipment for classes, as well as storage for supplies. An itemized budget will be requested with a proposal if the instructor will not be providing their own equipment.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:

This Electives Instructor is a contracted position and has a total stipend of $1,000, paid upon completion of teaching 10 elective sessions throughout the Summer Stretch programming.

Our work is rooted in ensuring people from marginalized communities have the opportunity to thrive in education and careers that they are passionate about. Rainier Scholars is an equal opportunity employer committed to promoting an equitable and inclusive environment for our scholars, families, and staff. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, and strongly encourage people of color, first generation college graduates, and people from working class backgrounds to apply.
