Job Duties

Raba Kistner is seeking a dependable Associate Engineer I to join our Infrastructure team in the Austin, TX area. Under general supervision, assists in directing project office operations including construction inspection and material testing operations to ensure compliance with project plans, approved shop/working drawings, and specifications. Responsible for Project Office in the absence of the Project Manager. Responsibilities include:

  • Contact supervisor for priorities and deadlines in the field.
  • Plan, schedule, and supervise work of assigned staff.
  • Write or assist with performance evaluations.
  • Assist Project Manager in projecting personnel and equipment needed for the Project.
  • Apply engineering principles, methods and techniques to the assurance of highway and related facility construction.
  • Perform engineering calculations.
  • Perform research and problem solving of engineering-related activities.
  • Provide on-the-job training for construction personnel.
  • Prepare, review, and/or approve reports.
  • Observe, measure, and conduct tests of materials to determine construction compliance with the project plans, approved shop/working drawings, and governing specifications. 
  • Work with the client, or representatives, on behalf of the Project Manager.
  • Ensure the safe utilization, storage and maintenance of all documents and tools.
  • Update Direct Report on progress and delays on every task or assignment.
  • Ensure safe usage and maintenance of individually assigned company vehicle and field equipment.
  • Meet established project deadlines.
  • Submit accurate, legible, comprehensive and complete testing and/or inspection reports on a daily basis in accordance with project Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) Plan.
  • Review plans, specifications, and shop/working drawings for project activities.
  • Resolve differences in the interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • P.E. License in applicable state, or if out of state must obtain P.E. license in applicable state within 6 months of hire.
  • A person in this position generally, but not necessarily has four (4) years progressively responsible experience in transportation engineering with one (1) year experience in construction quality control/assurance.

Thorough knowledge of: Engineering principles, practices, and methods, engineering fundamental,. engineering calculations. Considerable knowledge of: materials used in highway construction, highway construction plans, construction inspection procedures, and specifications. Working knowledge of: material testing methods, processes and procedures. Some knowledge of: Construction project document control techniques, human resource policies and procedures, construction management procedures, the State specific Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices or National Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, effective Supervisory techniques. Ability to: Supervise, plan and coordinate work activities, oversee programs, interpret engineering plans, and instruct, assign and review work, travel to project sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain. Work on ladders and scaffolding. Prepare and maintain records, files, and reports. Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external personnel. Analyze, problem solve, and recommend solutions. Good oral and written communications skills and ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal and external personnel. Intermediate in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Must possess a valid driver’s license within the applicable jurisdiction and meet firm’s auto insurability requirements. Able to travel to project sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain.

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hadns and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, utilize hand tools such as sledge hammers, shoversl, and pikcs, and drive vehicle short and/or long distances. Continupously required to talk or hears, tast or smell. Occasionally required to lift and or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud (metal can manufacturing department, large equipment, etc.).

Potential exposure to movement of heavy equipment on construction or roadway sites; potential exposure to hazardous dangerous chemicals and solvents, noise, dust, fumes, grease and oils, radiant and electrical energy, and vibration; all of which would require employee to follow proper safety procedures and utilize appropriate protective equipment. Able to use hand tools such as sledgehammers, shovels, and picks.

This position may require protracted or irregular hours. Flexibility to work irregular hours is necessary due to client needs. Work responsibilities may require out of town travel to Raba Kistner offices, client offices and project locations
