Quincy Institute is Hiring a Research Fellow (Geoeconomics) Near Washington, WA

The Quincy Institute (QI) has an opening for a research fellow focused on geoeconomics for its new Global South program. The main focus will be the production of research products, briefs and papers that make original contributions to the debate on U.S. relations with the Global South, which includes Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia & the Pacific Islands, and South Asia. The research fellow will also contribute to the debate through public-facing interventions in webinars and prominent media outlets and working regularly with QI’s advocacy team to advance QI’s goals among relevant stakeholders, including the U.S. government.

The position is based in Washington D.C. and entails a hybrid work schedule of at least three days per week in the DC office.

Responsibilities

  • Produce high quality research products, such as policy briefs and internal and external papers that focus on U.S. relations with and interests in the Global South.
  • Conduct policy-relevant research in one or more of the following: global trade, investment, finance, and supply chains in the Global South including Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, and South Asia.
  • Participate and contribute to debates through public-facing interventions in webinars and prominent media outlets.
  • Work with QI’s advocacy team to advance QI’s goals among relevant stakeholders, including the U.S. government.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years experience with a strong track record of policy-relevant scholarship is required. 
  • Ph.D. in political economy, economic geography, finance, international relations (with a geoeconomics focus), macroeconomics or other relevant field is strongly preferred.
  • A Master’s degree combined with a record of solid policy-relevant scholarship and impacting the public debate will be considered.
  • Research background in one or more of Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, South Asia is required. 
  • A basic level of familiarity with geopolitics and U.S. foreign policy is strongly preferred.
  • The candidate’s worldview should be broadly aligned with the grand strategy of Restraint.
  • Quantitative analysis background is required.
  • Proficiency in either R or Python is strongly preferred.
  • Clear and accessible writing and strong public presentation skills are required. 
  • Media and advocacy skills are preferred.
  • Professional level competence in Spanish or Portuguese is preferred.

Candidates must be dedicated to advancing QI’s mission, vision, and principles of responsible statecraft, centered on greater diplomatic and economic engagement and a grand strategy of Restraint for the United States. Candidates should also demonstrate initiative, professionalism and a strong work ethic.
