Queens Community House is Hiring a Substitute ESOL ABE Teacher Near Forest, NY

Hourly Rate: $33/hour (As Per Needed Basis Only)

Class Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; Day (9am-11:30am and 12-2:30pm) and Evenings (6:30-9:30pm).

Reports to: Director of Adult Education and Immigration Services

The Adult Education Program at Queens Community House is looking for Substitute English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) Teachers to join our diverse, multilingual, and dynamic teaching staff. Our classes are currently in-person and online.We have ESOL classes four days/nights a week. The Substitute Teacher will work closely with the Director, Adult Education Manager, and Case Manager of the WIOA-funded Adult Education evening program in creating a supportive community for our adult immigrant students as they build an academic and a career pathway in the health care industry.


Responsibilities

  • We have a DYCD-funded program during the day, and a WIOA-funded program in the evenings. Our teachers use technology to the fullest (e.g. smart boards and online lesson plans). Our lessons are presented through the Burlington English website and Ventures for WIOA. This is a great opportunity for new adult education teachers to gain teaching experience.
  • Our program provides lessons that improve the student’s ability to speak, understand, read and write the English language, and lessons that provide relevant grammar and workforce skills designed to meet the rigor of WIOA requirements. Students must acquire academic, critical-thinking, work readiness, digital literacy, and Reading and Writing competency. We also teach contextualized, participatory, and interactive ABE/ASE classes to a diverse set of adult working immigrant students in a workforce-centered teaching environment, incorporating Adult Learning Principles, College and Readiness Standards for Adult Education, and NYSED CUNY Career Kits.
  • The Substitute Teacher will teach the lesson plan as outlined by the absent teacher or the Program Coordinator in an in-person or online environment. Class instruction should be student-centered, and should reflect student needs and interests, which include employment, family health, access to services, community, civics, etc.
  • If lesson plan is not available, the Substitute Teacher may be asked to bring prepared lessons that improve students’ ability to speak, understand, read and write the English language, and lessons that provide relevant vocabulary and skills designed to improve quality of life to a diverse set of adult immigrant students.
  • The Substitute Teacher is expected to meet and instruct assigned classes and at the times designated, and to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • The Substitute teacher will work with the director and administrative staff to ensure successful achievement of curriculum goals and administrative duties (e.g. taking attendance for the class and sign-in sheets).
  • The Substitute will take attendance and submit attendance by email, maintaining accurate student records. The teacher may also be invited to conduct pre- and post- Best Plus 2.0 and TABE 11/12 testing, only if trained by WIOA RAEN on Best Plus 2.0 and TABE Testing.
  • Reinforce mission of QCH and adult education program policies, protocols, and procedures. Maintain confidentiality when it comes to the use of student information, and when receiving private information from students.
  • Responsible for management of own working hours, timely submission of timecards on ADP (online).


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s required. Master’s a plus. Foreign credentials are acceptable.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching adults (in ESOL/ABE/GED teaching environment preferred). Evidence of mastery and application of adult education principles required. Ideal candidates would have a lengthy work background in other industries (background in health care a plus).
  • Outstanding work ethic and professionalism with dealing with an adult population.
  • Must be able to teach in-person in location in Queens and have the flexibility to move online if needed.
  • Experience with integrating technology into classroom instruction and supplemental learning outside of a classroom setting required.
  • Knowledge of Pre-HSE and HSE curriculum and NYS HSE testing requirements and subject areas (reading, math, science, social studies and writing) preferred.
  • Strong familiarity with online teaching tools, such as Zoom, PowerPoint, YouTube, WhatsApp, online games for learning, Google Forms, etc.
  • High comfort level with using Email and Text as communication tools. Ability to check Highly organized, excellent written and verbal communication skills; high interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines, self-motivated, solution-oriented, and resourceful.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when dealing with private information.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of immigrant and adult learner issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Email, and Internet.
  • Best Plus 2.0 Certification and TABE Test 11/12 Certification preferred through RAEN.
  • Bilingual/Multilingual preferred: Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Russian verbal and written competencies a plus.
