Purdue University Northwest is Hiring a Lead Maintenance Worker Near Hammond, IN

Job Overview:

Purdue University Northwest's Maintenance Department is seeking a Lead Afternoon Maintenance Technician to join their team. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Lead position is self-directed, provides functional supervision over 5 maintenance staff, and performs building maintenance work. This position also supports functions such as mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, electrical, grounds, and building services. Practices and encourages a "Safety First" attitude by using safe work practices when performing all duties and responsibilities.

Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM and Friday 2:00pm – 10:30pm; Periodic overtime may be required to meet the needs of the department.

Pay: $24.00/hour plus .30 shift differential

Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and accountability in the completion of work assignments. Monitors the quality of maintenance and repair work. Functionally directs and evaluates the performance of maintenance staff through periodic inspections and direct daily observation. Prepares daily schedules of routine and repetitive work requests for functionally supervised staff. Work is coordinated in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager as determined by business needs. Supervises and assists other crafts when needed.
  • Responds to service calls when dispatched via phone or work order management system. Inspects worksite to determine method of installation, tools, material and necessary equipment needed. Performs basic functions such as replacing ballast, switches, outlets, fuses, etc. and disconnecting motors with regard to experience and safety.
  • Conducts periodic inspections of University Buildings and utilities systems. Ensures that planned preventative maintenance schedules and activities are completed. Assist management in monitoring and approving activities of contract personnel and services.
  • Assist with maintaining and servicing University piping and sanitary facilities, snow removal, and installing equipment as needed.

Education:

  • High school diploma/GED

Experience:

  • Five (5) consecutive years of documented work experience in maintaining multi-functional facilities.
  • One (1) year of documented functional supervision

  • Extensive and detailed knowledge of standard operating procedures for university campus buildings.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritize tasks in a self-directed work environment and maintain high levels of productivity while functionally supervising other employees, with frequent independent skilled work performed on building systems.
  • Demonstrated strong customer service and problem-solving orientation; seeks to solve problems with a sense of urgency.
  • Possession of strong mechanical aptitude
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work assignments.
  • Ability to handle all power tools, ladders, and other necessary power equipment as required.
  • Must have knowledge of standard practices and tools used in the maintenance and repair of building facilities, safety practices and procedures related to the building trades; basic math to add subtract multiply and divide.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to navigate a database.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record as determined by WL Risk Management via Motor Vehicle Records check.
  • Majority of work includes walking and standing with very little sitting; climbing stairs and ladders up to 10ft high also included in workday.
  • Must be able to lift, push pull and carry up to 50lbs frequently and up to 60lbs occasionally.
  • May be subject to call back to the University for emergency purposes; must work overtime as needed.
