REPORTS TO: Foreman

POSITION SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, perform journey level work in the painting, finishing, and maintaining of a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures; may direct the work of other workers in the performance of related work as required. All probationary full-time employees shall reside in St. Clair County by the end of their probationary period, and all employees who are past probationary period or who do not go through probation shall also reside in St. Clair County, Illinois, within six months of date of hire.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare, prime, sand, seal, patch and paint furniture, surfaces, buildings, and fixtures utilizing a variety of types of painting materials such as varnish, lacquer, shellac, enamel, latex, epoxy, water-proofing and heat resistant finishes.
  • Tape, flush, repair and apply texturing, wallpaper, and acoustic layers on a variety of surfaces. Adjust colors when necessary and exercise enhanced finishing skills when appropriate.
  • Apply materials to new construction, existing buildings, alterations, and remodeling.
  • Remove old paint, marks, scuffs, and graffiti using a variety of available products, power sprayers, and soda blasting.
  • Operate, clean and maintain all painting equipment, including brushes, rolls, sprayers, and electrostatic sprayers, pumps, etc. Safely store and label all materials.
  • Maintain and repair soda blasting compressor and accessories.
  • Estimate time and materials required; keep computerized records and submit reports of work performed.
  • Make recommendation and assist in the selection of materials used in jobs.
  • Offer assistance and advice on materials, designs, and color.
  • Erect scaffolding, rigging, and ladders, as necessary, in a manner consistent with safety codes.
  • Assists in the writing of specifications for repairs and new construction.
  • Fill in for vacations, sick leave, or whenever necessary for all positions; assist and serve as back up to co-workers.
  • Check and clean grounds; seed and plant; fertilize; cut grass, trim edges, trees and bushes; weed and maintain plants and grounds; remove snow and ice.
  • Work varying shifts, weekends and holidays; and serve on-call duty, as necessary.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent. Five years of experience as journeyman painter in a residential, a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting, both interior and exterior; completion of union, military or trade school apprenticeship program that includes theory and on-the-job work; or equivalent combination of post-secondary education, training and experience.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Familiarity with residential and commercial/industrial practices and processes of the painting trade; paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, paint removers, and related materials, and their properties and application. Ability to read, interpret, and comply with building codes and manuals. Demonstrated knowledge of painting and finishing. Experience operating and maintaining paint brushes and supplies, power and hand tools. Ability to follow occupational safety standards and practices. Computer skills are a must.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints and schematics, plans, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate with foreman and fellow employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, length, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must occasionally lift up to 75 pounds and move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

LICENSING AND REGULATION

Valid driver's license or ability to obtain a one by the start of employment and an acceptable driving record is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, occasionally works in outside weather conditions, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme heat or cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
