PKH is a nonprofit ed tech company designed to help the University of North Carolina System grow the number of adult learners through online delivery at the undergraduate level. We are equipping universities within the UNC System with best-in-class technology, processes, and student support solutions so they can better compete with out-of-state, online universities.

The Role

The Student Success Coach is a dedicated professional who understands the needs of adult learners and how to best support them in pursuing their higher education goals. This Student Success Coach aims to provide guidance and to empower adult students to succeed academically by assisting them in developing strategies, setting goals, and navigating unique challenges they may face. This role will work closely with adult students to promote their academic and personal growth, fostering a supportive and motivating enviornment throughout the student lifecycle.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide personalized academic advising to adult students, helping them select appropriate courses, create educational plans, and understand degree requirements.
  • Utilize relevant coaching principles and strategies to promote student self-awareness and inspire action.
  • Collaborate with students to identify their educational and career goals, create a clear roadmap for success, and monitor their progress.
  • Offer guidance and resources to improve study skills, time management, and organizational techniques to enhance academic performance.
  • Address the unique challenges faced by adult students, including work-life balance, time constraints, and financial concerns, by offering tailored solutions and referrals to relevant support services.
  • Assist students in navigating resources, including libraries, tutoring and personal wellness resources.
  • Encourage students to explore career pathways and resources and foster a holistic approach to education and future employment.
  • Identify at-risk students, develop intervention plans, and actively engage in outreach efforts to re-engage and retain adult learners.
  • Analyze and interpret data to effectively support students and improve student success.
  • Ensures the confidentiality of all student information. When handling Restricted Student Data, this role must: Adhere to and enforce the appropriate security policies based on the sensitivity of company data, report any security related issues to the appropriate individuals, and ensure the appropriateness, accuracy, and timeliness of institutional data used for the conduct of business.
What You Bring:
  • A bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Certification in Academic Coaching or a related coaching discipline preferred. 
  • At least 2 years of experience working in academic advising or related student support services with adult students in an online higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching individuals, particularly in an educational or support context, to enhance their academic and personal development.
  • Knowledge of the challenges and needs specific to adult learners in higher education.
  • Knowledge of and experience with CRM, LMS, SIS platforms and other technologies used in online higher education and student management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with adult students.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant academic policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment. 
  • This position works both normal business hours (Monday through Friday), as well as non-traditional hours (evening and weekend hours) to meet the scheduling needs of students. Must be able to work a flexible, changing work schedule, with some periods of high volume related to term starts and stops.

This position is remote, but based in North Carolina.
