This position operates within a 50-mile radius from Charlotte, North Carolina. By applying for this position, you acknowledge our operation radius and understand your commute. Teammates are asked to move job sites as project needs change.

General Description

The Grading Superintendent supervises field operations for all grading projects. The Grading Superintendent will directly supervise and coordinate activities of the Grading Foreman and may also engage in the trade work of the employees being supervised.

Key Duties

  • Oversees and supervise daily construction activities at work site, including scheduling of workers, delivery of equipment and materials, and progress of the project
  • Supervises operations, directing sub-contractors, and maintaining material inventory
  • Assessing job priorities and assigning employees to appropriate job tasks
  • Understand required productions and meet the goal
  • Keeping a set of as-built plans
  • Submit timecards and trucking reports weekly
  • Approve time weekly
  • Complete Weekly Summary of Daily Reports by Project
  • Have signed Work Change Order prior to completing any additional or changed work from the plans
  • Making sure employees have tools and equipment needed for job in order to ensure safety and production
  • Accurately turn in paperwork needed for Project Managers
  • Ability to oversee subcontractors and identify Value Engineering on jobs
  • Directly supervise grading Foreman
  • Experienced on all types of equipment for dirt and site projects
  • Ensures that all equipment is always safe and ready for operation by advising and assisting the Equipment Manager with normal servicing of equipment
  • Reads, understands, and interprets drawings and specifications
  • Reports on time and materials
  • Monitors the implementation of safety orientations, safety indoctrination, provides coaching for improvement, including OSHA 10 compliance
  • Able to work day or night shifts as required, including weekends as needed
  • Demonstrates safety 1st
  • Communicate professionally with everyone on site, including but not limited to supervisors, teammates, contractors, clients, and vendor partners.
  • Understand production and quantity requirements
  • Work closely with Engineer on any conflicts that may arise
  • Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts

Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and Experience. This is a high skilled position, as it requires demonstrable previous experience as a Grading Superintendent.

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with management and fellow employees.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of Grading Superintendent or related experience is preferred for this position.

Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Grading Superintendent to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
  • Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
  • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
  • Capable of being certified to enter confined spaces, including climbing into and out of excavations up to 20 feet in depth, using ladders or crawling, as required

Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Grading Superintendent encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites or equipment shop such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
