Position Title: Summer School Lifeguard for Surf and Turf Yoga Class & Water Polo Camp 

Full-time/Part-time: Part-time- Temporary

Reports to: Principal of Summer School/Athletic Director

Supervises: Summer School Campers

Pay Rate: $25.00 Hourly (non-exempt)

Summer School Camp Session Dates: 

Water Polo Camp: June 17 - June 21, 1pm - 3pm (no camp 6/19)

Surf and Turf Yoga Class: July 8-July 12, 9:30-12:00 pm

Surf and Turf Yoga Class: July 15-July 19, 9:30-12:00 pm

Position Summary

Responsibilities include assisting with the daily operations of the Surf and Turf Yoga camp by ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals at the pool. You'll be tasked with supervising swimmers, enforcing safety rules, and responding swiftly and effectively to emergencies. This role requires strong swimming skills, CPR and first aid certification, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Additionally, excellent communication and teamwork are essential for effectively coordinating with fellow lifeguards and other staff members to maintain a safe environment for all patrons. Working with the Camp Director, Athletic Director, and Summer School Administration. 

Duties and Specific Responsibilities

Assist with summer school preparation, which may include:

  1. Surveillance: Constantly monitoring the swimming area to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all patrons.
  2. Enforcement of Rules: Enforcing facility rules and regulations to maintain order and prevent unsafe behavior, such as running on the pool deck or diving in shallow water.
  3. Rescue Operations: Being prepared to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, including rescuing distressed or drowning swimmers using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  4. First Aid: Administering first aid and performing CPR as necessary until additional medical help arrives.
  5. Communication: Communicating effectively with patrons, colleagues, and supervisors, providing information about rules, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
  6. Equipment Maintenance: Inspecting and maintaining lifeguard equipment, such as rescue buoys, backboards, and first aid kits, to ensure they are in proper working condition.
  7. Record-Keeping: Keeping accurate records of incidents, rescues, and any other relevant information as required by facility policies and regulations.
  8. Training and Certification: Staying up-to-date with lifeguard training, certifications, and continuing education to maintain skills and knowledge of best practices in water safety and rescue techniques.
  9. Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service by assisting patrons with inquiries, offering guidance on water safety, and ensuring a positive experience for all visitors.
  10. Teamwork: Collaborating with other lifeguards and facility staff to coordinate surveillance efforts, respond to emergencies, and maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons.
  11. Collaborate with principal, vice principal, athletic director, and assistant athletic director when necessary to plan and execute camp activities

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Presentation High School Student in good academic standing 
  • CPR Certified, First Aid Certified, Lifeguard Certified 
  • Previous Lifeguarding Experience required 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong Swimming Skills: Lifeguards must be proficient swimmers capable of performing various rescue techniques and swimming long distances if needed.
  • CPR Certification: A current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification is usually required, as lifeguards may need to perform CPR in emergency situations.
  • First Aid Certification: Lifeguards should have training and certification in basic first aid to administer immediate care to injured or distressed individuals.
  • Lifeguard Certification: Completion of a lifeguard training program, which includes instruction on water safety, rescue techniques, emergency response protocols, and lifeguarding skills assessment.
  • Physical Fitness: Lifeguards need to maintain good physical fitness to perform their duties effectively, including swimming, rescuing, and providing first aid.

The Lifeguard must be able to: 

  • lift and/or carry moderate weight:10-20 lbs of school materials such as textbooks
  • Swim proficiently: Lifeguards should be strong and confident swimmers capable of navigating various water conditions and performing rescue maneuvers efficiently.
  • Maintain vigilance: Lifeguards must remain alert and attentive at all times, continuously scanning the water and surroundings to identify potential hazards or distressed swimmers.
  • Enforce rules: Lifeguards need to enforce facility rules and regulations to ensure the safety of all patrons, intervening when necessary to prevent unsafe behavior.
  • Respond to emergencies: Lifeguards must be prepared to respond quickly and decisively in emergency situations, including rescuing distressed swimmers, administering first aid, and initiating emergency protocols.
  • Communicate effectively: Lifeguards should have strong communication skills to convey information clearly to patrons, colleagues, and supervisors, as well as provide instructions during emergencies.
  • Work as a team: Lifeguards often work as part of a team, requiring the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, coordinate rescue efforts, and support each other in maintaining a safe environment.
  • Remain calm under pressure: Lifeguards need to stay calm and composed, even in high-stress situations, to make sound decisions and take appropriate actions to ensure the safety of individuals in their care.
  • Provide excellent customer service: Lifeguards should be approachable, helpful, and responsive to patrons' needs, providing assistance, guidance, and information to enhance the overall experience at the facility.
  • Stay physically fit: Lifeguards should maintain good physical fitness to perform their duties effectively, including swimming, rescuing, and providing first aid, while minimizing the risk of fatigue or injury.
  • Stay up-to-date with training: Lifeguards should regularly participate in training sessions, obtain necessary certifications, and stay informed about current practices and protocols in water safety and lifeguarding.

Work Environment

This position includes supervising Surf and Turf Yoga class and Water Polo camp on the Presentation High School campus, on the pool deck.
