For those who don’t know…
Bindery/finishing processes start after press sheets are printed in one or multiple colors on large offset presses. For point of reference, these press sheets can be as large as 28” x 40” which is greater than 8 times larger than a sheet of 8.5” x 11” copy paper. These printed sheets range from thin, like pages of a magazine, to thick like postcards, and much heavier.
Something has to happen to all printed press sheets after they leave the press room and enter the bindery. Bindery operators utilize a variety of precision machines that they are responsible for setting up. They maintain high-quality standards during runs, long and short, and are responsible for the maintenance of their machines.
Briefly, the following are just a few of the activities within our bindery/finishing department at Premier Print Group:
Cutter Operators cut paper before, during, and after various stages of production. This could include trimming the edges of 500 large posters or millions of postcards.
Folder Operators fold everything from small brochures and mailers up to 32-page signatures that ultimately become pages of booklets and books.
Saddle Stitcher Operators gather signatures (folded pages of booklets), staple them on their spine, and trim 3 edges.
Perfect Binder Operators produce what are commonly called paperback or softcover books. Pages are gathered, a wraparound cover is glued on at the spine, and the book is then trimmed on 3 sides.
Letterpress Operators die cut, score, and perforate paper
Drill Operators “punch” paper or booklets, often with 3 holes for insertion into 3-ring binders.
Shrink Wrap Operators run machines that apply clear plastic wrapping to 1 or multiple printed products within a package.
