*The current vacancy is for Spanish, and most positions are 15 - 27.5 hours per week*

*The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be active for 6 months*

Classified staff working in this job classification who
possess a valid and current CA teaching credential,
will be placed at Step 6 of the salary range designated for this classification.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of ELL students; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; interpret and translate for students, parents, counselors, teachers and others as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Instructional Assistant – Bilingual Proficient classification serves as an English language model to students who are limited or non-English speaking and assists by providing instruction to these students in both English and a designated second language. This classification also assists by interpreting and translating for students, parents, counselors, teachers and others. The Instructional Assistant – ELL classification serves as an English language model to students who are limited or non-English speaking and assists by providing instruction to these students.

Examples of Duties

Tutor individual or small groups of English Language Learners (ELL), reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; communicate with students in English and a designated second language to facilitate instructional processes. E
Provide translation or interpretation services in parent-teacher conferences or telephone calls with parents of limited or non-English speaking students; interpret at meetings, information sessions and related activities as required; translate notes, letters and other materials as assigned. E
Prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher; prepare, organize and collect testing information from students for appropriate program placement. E
Assist in administering, monitoring and scoring a variety of tests; participate in conducting and administering State and District language tests as needed; assist teachers with classroom testing; interpret for exams as needed. E
Assist the teacher with classroom management; assist with the reporting of student progress regarding performance and behavior. E
Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording grades; compile and update student information for the reclassification process; prepare and maintain student files and cards. E
Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs; prepare games, arts, crafts, plays and other activities to supplement lesson plans as assigned. E
Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays, operating audio-visual equipment and collecting paper, supplies and materials. E
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures. E
Maintain current knowledge of appropriate instructional methods and materials for ELL; participate in meetings and in-service training as assigned. E
Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • passage of the PUSD examination for this classification
    and
  • one year experience working with children in an organized setting
  • ability to speak, read and write in a designated second language

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Assist in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom, pull-out program or other learning environment.
Assist in the preparation of instructional materials.
Administer a variety of assessments.
Collect student data and prepare reports.
Assist with parent meetings.
Work independently to complete a variety of ELL program requirements including assessments, documentation of records and State and District reports.
Learn and implement methods and techniques used in creating plans and using materials to teach the English language to limited-or-non-English speaking students.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with students and staff.
Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward individuals from foreign cultures and ethnic communities.
Perform clerical duties such as filing, typing, duplicating and maintaining records and files related to the instructional program.
Speak, read and write English fluently.
Print and write legibly.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Read, interpret and follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Operate office, instructional and audio-visual equipment.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.

Effective July 1, 2020, all new employees to Poway Unified School District will be responsible for the fingerprint fee associated with new employee processing at the cost of $74 - cash/check ($76 for credit cards).
