Poway Unified School District is Hiring an Adult Transition Program - Instructional Assistant Near San Diego, CA

******PLEASE NOTE: This recruitment is for Abraxas High School .*******
All qualified candidates will be placed on an Eligibility List for six months.
This is a 9.5 month position.
Candidates who possess a valid and current CA teaching credential, 
will be placed at Step 6 of the salary range designated for this classification.
The job of Adult Transition Program Instructional Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing, under the direction of an assigned supervisor, a variety of instructional and support services for students ages 18 – 22 with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the enhancement of school-to-career transition; with specific responsibilities for assisting in the instruction, behavior management, and supervision of students.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assists a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individuals or small groups of students with disabilities in a classroom or other learning environment (e.g. monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and assignments in various subjects, etc.) for the purpose of executing the student's Individual Education Program (IEP), addressing the student's needs in the classroom, and improving student's success. 
  • Assists and supports instruction related to job-search skills (e.g. preparing resumes, cover letters, time management, thank you letters, providing mock interviews, etc.) for the purpose of preparing students for employment and career options; responsible for supporting vocational opportunities for students. 
  • Communicates with instructional staff, professional support personnel, case managers, and administrators (e.g. exchange information and resolve issues, concerns related to IEPs, student activities, and behavior, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives. 
  • Follows health and safety practices and procedures (e.g. follows safety and emergency procedures, maintains clean and organized environment, reports potential safety hazards or suspected abuse, and follows established custodial procedures for escorting students to/from classrooms, etc.) for the purpose of providing health care, and ensuring safety and security of students. 
  • Assists with lifting and generally providing basic needs of students (e.g. moving in/out of wheelchairs, braces or other orthopedic equipment, positioning or re-positioning students as needed; toileting, diapering; dressing, bathing, grooming; feeding or assisting with eating, etc.) for the purpose of caring for individual physical needs. 
  • Supports instruction of students with performing and developing daily living skills and self-help skills (e.g. cooking, banking, budgeting, money management, grooming, hygiene, mobility, time management, manners, socialization, etc.) for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal, and independent daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Monitors and assists students with special learning needs during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. drill, practice and study activities; directing students into safe learning activities and functions; restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Observes and supports the de-escalation of behavior of students in the classroom or other learning environment according to approved procedures; monitors and reports progress regarding student performance and behavior (e.g. monitor students during outdoor, lunch/cafeteria, library, call-outs, and recess activities as directed; accompany students on field trips, community-based activities, and to/from bus stops; assist with yard duty as assigned, etc.).
  • Operates a variety of audio-visual equipment, office equipment, computer and assigned software, and adaptive equipment and devices.
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities (e.g. assembling materials, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials, maintaining records and files, data entry, copying, etc.). 
  • Provides a variety of instructional and support services to students in the enhancement of school-to-career transition (e.g. assess student needs, interests and abilities to determine appropriate career goals; assist students in establishing and pursuing goals; assist students with developing vocational skills and obtaining jobs; assist students with completing various employment and educational packets and applications, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the development of students' vocational skills and readiness for employment. 
  • Provides, under the direction of assigned teacher and IEP staff, instructional support to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives, implementing IEP plans, and ensuring student success in school.
  • Responds to safety, medical needs, and emergency situations affecting students (e.g. administer first aid and CPR; administer medication according to physician instructions for the purpose of providing immediate first aid, resolving safety concerns, and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution. 
  • Transports and/or accompanies students via District vehicle or public transportation (e.g. work sites, field trips, interviews, hiring orientations, community events, etc.) for the purpose of assisting them in preparing for testing, interviews, and obtaining proper documentation to meet program objectives.
Experience: Two years of experience working with students of various age levels requiring a
specialized learning environment.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Equivalency: Possession of a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following: 1) completion of at least two years of study (minimum 48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education; 2) possession of an associate's (or higher) degree; or 3) passing the District's local assessment that demonstrates the knowledge and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics at a level meeting state and federal requirements.
 

 JOB REQUIREMENTS:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; applying assessment instruments; preparing and maintaining accurate records; analyzing data; and communicating at an optimal level.
 
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: instructional procedures and practices; age appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; and stages of child development/ behavior; principles and practices related to students with special education needs; safe practices in worksites and other activities; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; record keeping techniques; modern office practices and procedures; assessment instruments and techniques; health standards; knowledge of community resources; methods of instruction and training; basic subjects taught in District schools; and school safety and security practices.
 
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: assisting with and reinforcing instruction; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working with constant interruptions; working as part of a team; meeting deadlines and schedules; assessing issues; providing guidance; solving problems; adapting to changing work priorities; and traveling as needed to perform work duties.
 
Responsibility
 Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions.
 
Working Environment
 The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
Hazards
 Potential exposure to communicable diseases and contact with blood and other body fluids.
 Potential exposure to physical injury from aggressive behavior.
 
 
In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 (Minimum Salary) of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.
