SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Reiche School is seeking an energetic, creative, and effective teacher of Multilingual Language Learners (MLs). Reiche has a welcoming community and believes that collective efficacy can change the trajectory of student learning, especially for our MLs.
Howard C. Reiche Community School in the urban West End of Portland is ranked the most wonderfully diverse of all elementary schools in Maine, celebrating 16 different home languages and students from 21 different birth countries. About a quarter of our students are welcome newcomers. Our talented teaching staff use their impressive skills to provide a quality education for all of our students. We are all teachers at Reiche- there are Lead Teachers instead of a traditional principal model- our unique Teacher-Led structure empowers educators and involves students and staff in equity and social justice. Under the general direction of the school leadership team, in collaboration with the teaching staff at the school, Student Success Coordinators ensure students and their families have an excellent transition, onboarding, and enrollment process at Reiche school that increases everyone's sense of belonging.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and maintain systems for onboarding for students and their families that fosters belonging
Assess students to find areas for academics and social emotional growth
Communicate and liaison with all stakeholders, including teachers, students, families, community members
Support students who are struggling during their transition by helping them access their strategies and strengthen relationships with teachers, the social workers and school counselor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
EQUITY: Strong equity orientation and an openness to personal reflection on deepening awareness of personal bias and being culturally and linguistically responsive. Demonstrated conviction around having high expectations for all students. Conviction that all students can achieve at high levels, and a deep-seated belief that all teachers have the capacity to get them there. Experience with culturally, linguistically and trauma responsive pedagogy. Asset orientation towards students, especially with multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
FLEXIBILITY- This is a new position and we may adjust roles and responsibilities throughout the year to support students and their families. Demonstrated ability to collaborate, adapt and change as needed in a role.
CONTENT KNOWLEDGE - ESOL endorsement preferred, knowledgeable about assessments and instruction that can help move students to accelerated growth
RELATIONSHIP BUILDER: Great relationship builder. It is essential that collaboration is a skill for the candidate. Demonstrated ability to build trust with teachers and administrators. A great teammate. Someone who lifts people up rather than bringing them down. Someone who has a “go-getter” attitude about work, and is a positive role model for their community.
COMMUNICATION: Excellent oral and written communication skills. Leads with clear rationale, with a child-centered approach and equity at the forefront.

expertise in building relationships with multilingual families
