    BEACH PROGRAM - SPECIAL EDUCATOR
    Portland Public Schools is seeking an innovative and collaborative special educator for our BEACH program, a district program serving students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or other neurodevelopmental and communication disorders in grades K – 5. The BEACH program assists students with ASD to function as independently as possible by strengthening and building academic and adaptive skills, functional communication and positive behaviors. In this position, the special educator will collaborate with the SLP, OT, PT and BCBA to address characteristics of ASD that are interfering with student success through systematic, evidence-based programming. The special educator will also consult with general education teachers on a regular basis regarding students’ educational needs, accommodations, and modifications in the general education setting. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in special education teaching and case management, experience working with students on the autism spectrum, proficiency or willingness to become proficient with the NPDC’s 27 Evidence-Based Practices for Individuals with ASD, a solid understanding of ABA programming, demonstrated ability to conduct IEP meetings, and the ability to collaborate and work within a team structure to support the needs of students. The ability to relate positively to students, parents, and staff is essential in this position. Additional professional development opportunities are available, including mentoring in evidence-based ASD education and BCBA supervision. Training in Safety Care is required.
