Portland Gastroenterology Center is Hiring a Histotechnologist / Histotechnician Near Portland, ME

Job Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Histology Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a background in clinical laboratory work and possess knowledge of laboratory procedures and anatomy.

Under the indirect supervision of the laboratory manager, the Histotechnologist / Histotechnician performs all duties of a grossing technician and histology technician in the preparation of gastrointestinal and endoscopy tissue for microscopic examination. The successful candidate is well organized and follows all established laboratory procedures for gross dissection, tissue processing, embedding, tissue sectioning and staining.

· Detail oriented individual who proactively checks for errors and inaccuracies.

· Associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.

· Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or related field preferred.

· Familiarity with routine histology procedures.

· National certification (or eligible) in histology by ASCP.

· Previous experience in surgical grossing techniques is preferred.

· Demonstrates annual competencies for the required tasks of the position.

· Three years’ experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

· Successfully performs technical duties related to the production of histopathological slides.

· Performs high complexity testing under the indirect supervision of the pathology laboratory manager to include macroscopic gross dissection and description of gastrointestinal and endoscopy tissue.

· Ability to embed and orient small specimens.

· Sections paraffin blocks using a microtome.

· Follows lab safety and established quality control procedures.

· Ensures accurate laboratory data accompanies every specimen that is accepted to the laboratory for processing.

· Embeds processed specimens with proper orientation.

· Prepares patient material for referral laboratory send outs.

· Maintains and operates all pathology laboratory equipment.

· Selects appropriate processing schedule for tissue processing.

· Performs requested special stain procedures and documents results.

· Accurately enters patient data in laboratory information system.

· Documents equipment maintenance.

· Assists in training new histology personnel.

· Reports to work consistently and promptly as scheduled.

· Ability to perform repetitive duties, following detailed instructions from standard procedures.

· Track referral lab turnaround times for reporting.

· Capable of identifying problems that may affect test performance.

· Ability to stand or sit at workstation for extended periods of time.

· Operate under a quality management system with proper record- keeping and compliance standards.

· Ability to use computer software and databases to access, review and collect information.

· Ensures accurate labeling of all tissue samples.

· Covers department staffing needs by adjusting weekly schedule to cover PTO.

· Varied daily tasks – Split your workday between embedding, cutting and grossing duties.
