Portland Art Museum is Hiring a Protection Services Officer I (Full-Time) Near Portland, OR

Job Description

The Protection Services Officer I (PSO) is a member of the Protection Services team, which performs a critical role by protecting the safety of visitors, staff and Museum property. PSOI’s work in various locations throughout the Museum including the lobby, gallery spaces, special exhibits, gift shop/ cafe areas and patrolling. This role will be cross trained to work in these different locations and helps adherence to the “Visitor Agreement to Safe & Inclusive Spaces”.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Acts as the first responder to disruptive persons entering the lobbies and adjacent areas
  • Interacts with visitors in a welcoming manner by assisting with wayfinding and providing information related to the Museum collection, public programs, and events
  • Safeguard Museum assets, property, equipment, and facilitates against illegal and destructive acts
  • Communicate museum policies in a respectful manner using flexibility and discretion to achieve a safe and positive outcome
  • Customer service focus at all times
  • Maintain gallery capacity and oversees crowd control primarily during high traffic events and exhibitions 
  • Resolve conflict using de-escalation techniques and upholding equity and inclusion values
  • Removes and trespass visitors if needed from the campus who exhibit harassment, discrimination, threatening or disrespectful behaviors 
  • Communicating with law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical personnel
  • Initiating building evacuations
  • Communicates important notification functions via phone, email or 2 way radio 
  • Document activity and write reports in a complete and concise manner
  • Opening and closing the Museum 
  • Gallery inspections
  • Responding to requests for assistance 
  • Assisting with the training of newly hired security officers
  • Assisting with building evacuation procedures and sweeps during emergency situations

Secondary or Additional Responsibilities

  • Utilize radio for department communications and other technology such as computer, iPad, etc
  • Attend ongoing training and learning opportunities 
  • Promote and support institutional equity and inclusion goals
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding the Museum’s proprietary information and operations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • Approachable, customer service focused demeanor with a people-first value
  • Basic knowledge of security principles
  • Prior experience interacting with people suffering from mental illness and or under the influence of drugs/alcohol 
  • Work collaboratively in an equitable and inclusive framework with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Comfortable dealing with conflict, de-escalation, and confrontation
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Basic operational knowledge of computer including word processing and email 
  • Adhere to Security dress code and visibly represent the Museum
  • Effective problem solving skills 

Education, Formal & Informal Experience, Training Required, Certification, Etc.

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education required
  • Current Oregon Department of Public Standards Safety Training (DPSST) Unarmed certification (or obtained within 30 days of employment)
  • First Aid, CPR & AED training certification (or obtained within 30 days of employment)
  • Prior security, law enforcement or military experience preferred but not required

Job Conditions

  • Non-Exempt/Full-Time Status
  • Schedule/Hours: Thursday and Friday from 9:30am to 8:00pm, Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 AM - 8:00 PM (40 hours per week)
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and special events 
  • On-call rotation required 
  • Overtime and weekends required
  • Works with emergency equipment including first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and AED devices
  • Interaction with potentially violent or hostile individuals
  • Exposure to blood and bodily fluids due to medical incidents 

Physical Activities

  • Occasionally lift/push/pull up to 50lbs in emergencies 
  • Frequently ascends and descends stairs
  • Occasionally remains stationary for prolonged periods of time but in an emergency will require rapid movement through the Museum campus
  • Occasionally grasping and handling of objects such as pens, computer mouse, and radio
  • Frequently talking with colleagues and visitors
  • Occasionally operates a computer and other office equipment, such as a phone, i-Pad, and printer
  • Frequently listening and communicating to callers on the radio

  • Budgeted compensation is within pay grade C ($17.74 min - $20.39 mid - $23.07 max), depending on experience
