Job Summary

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Parent Educator will recruit and maintain a caseload of thirty (30) families and conduct visits to participating families to provide support and parenting education that will improve the health of prenatal mother and child, parent knowledge and parenting practice regarding child development, early detection of developmental delays, parent-child interactions, etc. utilizing the Parents as Teachers model.

Qualifications


  • Associate’s Degree or 60 college hours in Early Childhood or a related field required; Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Two (2) years of related work experience required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not include any supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Build relationships with parents and children through personal visits and group meetings.

  2. Deliver personal visits, conduct screenings, and facilitate group connections upon completion of the Parents as Teachers training.

  3. Recruit families for participation in the program within the assigned area, to maintain a caseload of at least twenty-five (25) pregnant families.

  4. Adhere to required maximum number of personal visits not to exceed forty-eight (48) for first year Parent Educators and sixty (60) for second year of service and beyond.

  5. Conduct the required number of personal visits with participating families to provide health, development and parenting information; develop plans for each visit using the Personal Visit Record, ensuring that families receive consistent research-based information.

  6. Provide leadership in the provision of services within the community; conduct community referrals for participants/clients.

  7. Gather information on families including conducting pre/posttest information.

  8. Participate in trainings and other staff development activities.

  9. Earn the required competency based professional development hours related to the five (5) Parents as Teachers core competency areas; obtain annual recertification with the national office for the program.

  10. Execute the Parents as Teachers curriculum with the program participants/clients.

  11. Keep supervisor abreast of child/family progress and family issues and concerns as they arise.

  12. Maintain ongoing communication; review information based upon own caseload with supervisor on a regular basis.

  13. Participate in the planning and execution of group connections; encourage parents to participate in group connections.

  14. Complete and submit required reports, schedules, and other documentation as required in a timely manner.

  15. Maintain up to date records/documentation of the visits that contribute to the annual program reports.

  16. Track family health needs and access to preventive care. 

  17. Serve as a liaison with program partners.

  18. Attend parent meetings and staff meetings.

  19. Comply with the established policies and procedures of the agency and program.

  20. Contribute to team effort by performing other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good oral and written communication skills, including good reading skills.

  • Ability to perceive and deal with sensitive issues while maintaining confidentiality and objectivity.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Work in a non-smoking environment.

Special Conditions

Maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record with appropriate level of insurance.
