Job Summary
This position performs skilled manual and technical work in connection with water and sewer system construction and maintenance programs, water meter repair and testing, and the operation of a water treatment plant and water pumping stations. Duties include laying out work and maintaining work schedules. Work is received in the form of specific assignments through frequent conferences with a supervisor and is inspected occasionally while in progress and upon completion for quality and quantity of work accomplished.
Job Responsibilities
§ Works with field crews and participates in the construction of extensions to the water and sewer distribution systems.
§ Performs monthly testing of water supply.
§ Acts as a Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator and performs specialized work in the proper operation and maintenance of water treatment plants and pumping stations.
§ Takes and records readings of instruments, adjusts equipment, and maintains an operations log.
§ Performs preventive maintenance procedures.
§ Collect and analyze water samples.
§ Conduct pressure tests on system.
§ Maintains and replaces fire hydrants.
§ Perform routine maintenance to hydrants.
§ Flush water systems when needed, including hydrants and dead-end water flows in underground pipes.
§ Install and repair meters.
§ Assists in preparation and maintenance of water and sewer division records including diagrams of services and extensions.
§ Maintains and checks inventory of supplies and equipment in accordance with established procedures.
§ Perform all other duties as required or as situation dictates.
Minimum Qualifications
§ High school diploma or GED
§ Five years of experience in municipal water system operations including water meter repairs and water treatment operations; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
§ Ability to plan and perform unusual and difficult work involving the use of considerable ingenuity, initiative and judgment.
§ Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
§ Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Preferred Qualifications
§ Bilingual (English / Spanish)
§ Possession of a class “A” wastewater and surface water certificate as issued by the State of Texas.
Work Conditions & Physical Demands
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
§ Work requires a high level of physical effort such as stooping and bending and the lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
§ Work requires long periods of standing and walking, up to 4 hours continuously and up to 8 hours in a day.
§ Work may require exposure to extremes of weather, particularly heat, and duty conditions.
§ An employee in this position may be required to report to work after hours and on weekends.
Additional Requirements
§ Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
§ Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
§ Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation to be hired for this position.
