Job Summary

This job requires the use of complicated drawings, wiring diagrams and specifications, a wide variety of precision measuring instruments, and a broad shop knowledge. The job requires considerable physical effort along with continuous mental or visual effort. Careless performance of these duties may cause lost time accidents to others as well as to this employee. This employee is often responsible for directing the work of one helper. Common titles in the general workplace for employees in this classification might be master mechanic, master electrician, master builder, HVAC Technician and master welder.

Job Responsibilities

• Diagnose causes of problems and or/failures in heating/air condition systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair,
• and/or systems replacement needs.
• Inspects HVAC systems and their components (heating units, exhaust fans, ventilation units, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating conditions, identifying necessary repairs, and recommending preventive maintenance.
• Performs routine and preventive maintenance as needed for the purpose of ensuring the ongoing functioning of HVAC systems.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical power and control circuits
• Troubleshoot and repair motor vehicles and heavy equipment
• Weld precise metal fabrications from detailed drawings
• Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Two years formal HVAC trades training or equivalent experience and/or certification
• Three years’ experience in electrical construction or maintenance.
• Ability to use precision electrical and electronic instruments, AC and DC welding equipment, hand tools, and other tools as assigned with proper instructions, as appropriate to the position being hired
• Ability to plan and perform unusual and difficult work involving the use of considerable ingenuity, initiative and judgment.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment when needed (motor grader, backhoe, loader, excavator).
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written direction.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual (English / Spanish)
• Air Conditioning knowledge/Equipment Operator/ Welding Skills
• Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Work Conditions & Physical Demands

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

• Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions such as heat, cold, dust, and vehicle exhaust.
• Medium physical effort including long periods of standing, up to 8 continuous hours and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.
• Withstand prolonged periods of standing, walking, and/or sitting.
• Frequent contact with the public.

Additional Requirements

• Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
• Selected candidate must pass a post-employment drug screening and background investigation to be hired for this position.
