Port of Brownsville is Hiring a Foreman Near Brownsville, TX

Job Summary

This position is supervisory over limited construction or maintenance operations. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising and participating in public works and public utilities of a small scope and repetitious in nature. Supervision may be exercised over equipment operators as well as a small group of skilled and/or semi-skilled workers. Duties include laying out work and maintaining work schedules, but the necessity for giving technical instructions is not usually involved because of the nature of the work. Work is received in the form of specific assignments through frequent conferences with a supervisor and is inspected occasionally while in progress and upon completion for quality and quantity of work accomplished.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers and equipment operators in the maintenance of water distribution lines, sanitary sewer collection lines, grounds, docks, patio construction, and other facilities.
  • Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instructions from supervisor.
  • Keeps work, time and material records and prepares progress reports.
  • Prepares purchase requisitions and material requisitions for necessary equipment and materials.
  • Performs related works as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree or a minimum of ten years of experience in road construction, construction and maintenance of facilities and/or water distribution systems and sewer collection systems; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Topcon Laser Systems.
  • Knowledge of the materials, building construction methods, road construction methods, and equipment commonly used in water distribution and wastewater collection systems and/or general facilities maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to layout, direct and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and to make reports in a legible and accurate manner.
  • Ability to work outdoors, under adverse weather conditions.
  • Must have some mathematical ability.
  • Must have a high degree of ingenuity, initiative and must be able to exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Excellent and effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (English / Spanish).

Work Conditions & Physical Demands

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Work requires a high level of physical effort such as stooping and bending and the lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Work requires long periods of standing and walking, up to 4 hours continuously and up to 8 hours in a day.
  • Work may require exposure to extremes of weather, particularly heat, and dusty conditions
  • An employee in this position may be required to report to work after hours and on weekends.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation to be hired for this position.
