Tradesman III position summary:

  • Must be able to operate grading, excavating and dozing equipment with a high degree of professionalism and skill while providing support to projects that involve blue prints and grade markings while demonstrating the skill to complete grades and slopes accurately with the direction of a survey crew.
  • Lead a crew of tradesman to provide support projects.
  • Ability to use grade shooting tools levels and have the ability to provide grade marks for smaller projects.
  • Operate frontend loader to remove various dunnage and debris from open wharves, transit sheds, waterfront roadways and real estate properties
  • Operate road and warehouse sweepers to clean all terminal roadways, transit sheds and open wharves in preperation for cargo transportation and storage.
  • Maintain direct communication with waste removal company to safely and strategically stage dumpsters for loading and removal.
  • Operate forklift, warehouse sweeper, 3 ton lift crane, road sweeper and backhoe.
  • Ensure all equipment is operating safety and properly before use.
  • Perform general trash hauling, loading dumpsters and moving barricades.
  • Communicate for daily dumpster counts, equipment usage and hours worked for billing purposes.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor outside of scope of operation of equipment as directed by the outside maintenance supervisor
  • Must be able to learn and become proficient with all new equipment that may arrive.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:

  • HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
  • DUTIES as Tradesman as assigned by Outside Maintenance Foreman
  • Receive work orders, oral instructions and sketches that provide information on work to be done
  • May operate ditching machinery and install clay, plastic, and cement pipe
  • Maintain and operate all construction hand tools
  • Examine and provide time and cost estimates of property work.

Carpentry Specialty

  • Familiar with residential and construction grade carpentry work as required
  • Familiar with repairs to buildings and railroad tracks
  • Repair concrete, asphalt, and floor covering
  • Install and/or repair fencing and gates for Homeland Security
  • Install / repair, and replace doors and hardware
  • Familiar with cement forms
  • Install and repair roof / Paint, Sheetrock, and perform various hardware repairs on different types of buildings.
  • Perform duties involving moving furniture, storm drain maintenance, and plumbing and various other facility maintenance activities

All Specialties

  • Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime
  • when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be
  • fulfilled during regular working hours
  • Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor

  • Perform other duties as required

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required
  • 10 years maintenance experience desired
  • License or certification in specialty, if applicable, required
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors:
  • Knowledge of plumbing industry
  • Knowledge of Port Houston safety rules and procedures
  • Knowledge of industrial painting
  • Knowledge of general construction
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Decision making skills based on Port Houston requirements / needs
  • Ability to operate a forklift
  • A current, valid Texas driver's license is required
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30

days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment
