JOB DESCRIPTION
Academically Gifted Teacher
 
Position Code:
 
Department: All Elementary Schools and Polk County Middle School
 
FLSA: Exempt
 
Reports to: Principal
 
Supervises: N/A
 
Job Summary: To provide high quality, active learning experiences for academically talented children in a safe, caring, and respectful environment and to provide appropriate challenges enrichment for all children as outlined in the county policies for academically gifted and intellectually talented by implementing the essential functions listed below.
 
Essential Functions:
1. Plan developmentally appropriate lessons and learning activities that address the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS). Appropriate planning includes:
  • Develop a yearly plan/pacing chart aligned to the NCSCS.
  • Design unit plans and lesson plans that support the yearly plan.
2. Deliver well-organized, well-connected, smoothly flowing lessons that require active student participation and that students understand.
3. Effectively manage student behavior.
  • Develop, teach, and implement a classroom management/student behavior plan.
  • Create a “respect for all” environment in the classroom and throughout the school.
  • Monitor student behavior throughout the school day: classroom, class changes, lunch, and recess.
  • Administer consistent, appropriate interventions for student misbehavior.
  • Maintain student and teacher dignity at all times.
  • Realize that student behavior issues are additional opportunities to teach a child.
4. Analyze test data and other diagnostic information and use this information in planning.
5. Use assessment as an integral element in instruction. Check student work and provide feedback in a timely manner.
6. Be knowledgeable of and use current technologies in planning, communications, and in instruction.
7. Work cooperatively with all staff members and consistently maintain a professional attitude.
8. Make parent contacts an important element in the overall learning experience.
9. Maintain accurate records and submit reports and other information in a timely manner.
10. Understand and comply with laws and policies.
11. Develop a plan for professional growth and participate in staff development activities.
12. Develop and maintain a teacher portfolio that contains evidence/artifacts relating to
job performance.
13. Maintain high performance expectations for all students.
 
Education, Experience, and Skills Required:
  1. Have or be eligible for NC licensure in Academically Gifted
  2. Knowledge of characteristics and learning patterns of academically talented children.
Terms of Employment: 10 months – Teacher Salary Scale
 
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Board of Education policy, North Carolina statutes, and goals established by the Principal.
 
Environmental Factors:
Normal classroom environment.
