JOB DESCRIPTION

Middle School Core Subject Teacher

Position Code:

Department:Polk County Middle School

FLSA:Exempt

Reports to:Principal

Supervises:N/A 

Job Summary: To provide high quality, active learning experiences for PCMS students in a safe, caring, and respectful environment by implementing the essential functions listed below.

Essential Functions:

1.Plan developmentally appropriate lessons and learning activities that address the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS). Appropriate planning includes:

§Developing a yearly plan/pacing chart aligned to the NCSCS.

§Designing unit plans and lesson plans that support the yearly plan.

§Differentiating instructional plans for at-risk and for academically talented students.

§Planning for appropriate materials use, field trips, and other special learning events that support and enhance instructional goals.

§Preparing clear lesson plans and instructions for substitutes.

2.Deliver well-organized, well-connected, smoothly flowing lessons that require active student participation and that students understand.

3.Effectively manage student behavior. 

§Develop, teach, and implement a classroom management/student behavior plan.

§Create a respect-for-all environment in the classroom and throughout the school.

§Monitor student behavior throughout the school day: classroom, class changes and lunch.

§Administer consistent, appropriate interventions for student misbehavior.

§Maintain student and teacher dignity at all times.

§Realize that student behavior issues are additional opportunities to teach a child.

4.Analyze test data and other diagnostic information and use this information in planning.

5.Use assessment as an integral element in instruction. Check student work and provide feedback in a timely manner.

6.Be knowledgeable of and use current technologies in planning, communications, and in instruction.

7.Work cooperatively with all staff members and consistently maintain a professional attitude.

8.Make parent contacts an important element in the overall learning experience.

9. Maintain accurate records and submit reports and other information in a timely manner.

10.Perform all assigned non-instructional duties.

11.Understand and comply with laws and policies.

12.Develop a plan for professional growth aligned to school improvement goals and personal professional growth.

13.Actively participate in school and county staff development activities..

14.Develop and maintain a teacher portfolio that contains evidence/artifacts relating to job performance.

15.Maintain high performance expectations for all students.

16.Demonstrate a sincerely caring attitude toward students.

17. Demonstrate an understanding that flexibility is a key element in the successful operation of a school.

Other Functions:

1. Other duties as assigned by the principal.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required:

1. Have or be eligible for NC licensure in middle school subject area of assignment

2. Previous experience with middle school students preferred

Terms of Employment:10 months – Teacher Salary Scale

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Board of Education policy, North Carolina statutes, and goals established by the Principal.

Environmental Factors:

This position requires walking and moderate lifting. Must have the ability to stand up for an extended time.
