Pleasant Point Health Center is Hiring an Environmental Technician Near Perry, ME

Job Overview:

The Passamaqoddy Sipayik Environmental department is looking for a motivated individual that can work temporarily for up to 90 working day from the start of hire in April of 2024. The Environmental Technician (ET) will be under the immediate supervision of the fisheries Biologist and work directly on diadromous fisheries restoration projects. Work conditions range from remote outdoor monitoring locations to lab and office work. Also, the ET will work cooperatively with other Tribal programs, summer youth programs, volunteers, and any additional college employment programs.

Role:

The Environmental Technician will be expected to primarily work under the Ecology Program. The Fisheries Biologist will mentor and supervise the Environmental Technician for the duration of employment. When available, staff members may also work with the ET and water quality monitoring efforts, GIS/GPS data collecting and mapping and perform site visits at monitoring locations at tribal trust and fee lands.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Work primarily on projects funded by NOAA, but will assist on projects funded by USEPA, BIA, USFWS, and other federal & non-federal sources if needed.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of fish monitoring systems at various fish-ways and field locations.
- Fisheries population assessment via fish counting methods.
- The technician will be responsible for using lab and field equipment.
- Assist with fish passage assessments at field locations and site surveys using drone technology.
- Collect Environmental DNA (eDNA) at identified monitoring locations.

- Filter and prepare eDNA at the Sipayik Environmental Lab and maintain proper storage.

-Assist with eel passage assessment and monitoring at various dam locations.

-Collect scale samples to assess the age and spawn behavior of alewife populations.

- Assist in baffle construction and installation at various fish-ways.

-Data collection and entry using excel and perform repairs on field equipment as needed.

- Will be required to be on watercrafts on rivers, lakes, and ocean water with a minimum of one environmental department staff member.

-Participates and assist in outreach activities.

Qualifications:

-College student or student enrolled in an education program are preferred.

-Environmental monitoring experience is also preferred.

- Hold a valid driver's license.

-Works as a team player.

-Maintain professionalism at all times.

-Able to carry and lift moderate to heavy field equipment to monitoring sites.

-Willing to accommodate a flexible work schedule.

-Qualified Native American will be given first preference.

Pay: $18.00 - $19.00 per hour
